How to Alter a Bridesmaid Dress Strap

Phantom Rose
Halter dresses are a popular type of dress. They are trendy and fashionable, and girls and women often wear them at proms, weddings or casually in the summertime. Halter tops feature a piece of fabric that loops around the neck to connect to both sides of the dress. The piece of fabric aids in keeping the dress held in place. However, halter dresses do not always fit every person appropriately since every girl or woman's body shape is different. Sometimes the strap around the back of the neck might be too loose causing the dress to hang too low, and other times it might be too snug, causing the dress to sit too high.

Things You'll Need

Seam Ripper

Pin

Needle

Thread

Scissors

Step 1

Locate the seam of one end of the strap connected to the dress; this seam is located on the inside of the dress and is where the strap is sewn to the left and right sides of the dress.

Step 2

Use the seam ripper to carefully rip the stitches connecting the end of the strap to the dress. When you are finished, that end of the strap should be disconnected from the dress.

Step 3

Select the appropriate length of the strap by putting on the dress and adjusting the strap to comfort. Pin the strap to the dress to mark the best location, and remove the dress.

Step 4

Thread the needle with thread. Select a thread color that is as close to the original color of thread as possible. Tie a small knot at the finish of the thread to ensure it catches when you sew the strap.

Step 5

Remove the pin, and sew the strap to the dress by making small stitches up through the strap and dress and down through the dress and strap. Repeat this along the entire length of the strap.

Step 6

Finish the thread on the inside of the dress, and then cut the thread with scissors and tie a knot to hold it in place.

Tips

Dampen the thread with your tongue to make it stiff before you try to thread it through the needle.

Warnings

Take care not to puncture your fingers when sewing. You might need to wear a thimble to ensure you do not poke yourself.
