As the cost of the use of fossil fuels continue to rise, more and more individuals and companies are looking into the possibilities presented by alternative energy sources. Alternative energy sources are those that derive energy from either easily renewable resources like corn or those that the natural world provides in constant supply such as the sun, wind or water.
These so called "alternative" energy sources are not new. They have been used to get work done since humans have been living as civilized creatures. It is, after all, corn that powers the mule to plow the field and wind and water mills have long been used to draw water or grind grain. What is different now is th at new technology and increased demand for energy around the world has convinced large, well funded companies to seriously look into the development of these energy sources so that they can be efficiently be used to power large numbers of people. Another factor encouraging this development is that for the first time large numbers of consumers are expressing interest in using alternative energy sources. There are many reasons for this but some of them are:
-All fossil fuels, to a greater or lesser extent, create pollution when used to make energy. This has a cumulative negative effect on the environment and recently these effects have begun to have dire circumstances.
-Fossil fuels are expensive to find, harvest and process, driving up the cost of energy.
-Although both coal and oil are technically renewable resources, the process takes thousands of years, leading to the probability that the world may at some point run out of them.
As we all know, in a capitalistic society, nothing of significance ever happens unless there is a profit to be made.
Fortunately, as technology improves and consumers increase their demand, alternative energy sources finally have the potential to become profitable. This is attracting the notice of the large companies that have the financial resources to develop these sources of energy. They will only do so however if they see a large number of dollar signs on their side of the equation.
These new or revamped energy companies provide the first real hope for wholesale change in how the energy we use is created. As more and more of these companies are created the lower the cost of using these energy sources would be for the consumer which would increase demand. These companies would also start to advertise the advantages of their particular energy source, likely increasing demand even more. The higher the demand, the more companies will get involved, resulting in more competition and innovation. Hopefully the end result of all this would be an efficient, cost effective and environmentally friendly to the solution to the problems presented by the use of fossil fuels. Perhaps the future will be powered in such a way as to keep both nature and our bank books happy.
