How to Always Get What You Want

Rik Rodriguez
If you are reading this article and you have come here because of the title, you may be disappointed. Because, if you think that you are always going to get what you want in life you could be mistaken. You may have heard the song "You Cant Always Get What you Want." Well, I believe that you can get what you think you need. But, most times when people finally work and get what they want they are unhappy. Interesting enough, most people that I have talked to over the last 40 years think that if they have plenty of money that they would be happy. It's funny for me to see these people work 2 jobs so they can drive a shiny car a few miles to work and back. Their wives have jobs and the children go from school to day care. They have a nice house that they are paying for 3 times over. When you see them they are as far from happiness as you can get. How many Americans do you see that are truly satisfied with their life in the USA? Seriously, have you ever known anyone who is working for their house, car and daycare payments that is happy? Well I haven't.

I grew up in rural America where people worked 12 hrs a day on average and I always remember that the farmers and mill workers were mostly miserable with their lives. They worked all week and sometimes on Saturday then they went to the bar to forget what happened that week. Finding happiness can be as simple as getting to know your self. What makes you happy and satisfied. Find out what gives your life purpose. Not what everyone else thinks you should do. Learning about yourself can be hard , you must be objective. I had a really interesting teacher in high school that really shaped my life. He taught us to step away from ourselves and look at yourself as if you did not know the person. When we started doing this exercise. I was able to make an amazing transformation in my life. I saw myself as a victim of society as many of you do also. I started to see myself as I really am and took the necessary steps to change the aspects of myself that I did not like. Man it was plenty of work because I felt there was plenty of things that I needed to change. The first one being happiness. This one was maybe one of the more difficult aspects of my journey.

I did not search for happiness, I decided to be happy. It did not matter if everyone around me was miserable and trapped in their lives. They could do the same if they wanted to. Most will want to change but they will not put the work into changing. They will always blame external circumstances for the short comings of their existence. You do not have to be one of those people. Just like me you can be happy and learn about yourself despite everyone else. It isn't easy to be honest to yourself and try to work out your feelings. Its work but I know you can do it if I did.
