The most commonj way that women become anorexic is through normal dieting. They see that they are losing weight by eating less, so they continually eat fewer and fewer calories until they're eating almost nothing. Most people with anorexia eat some amount of food, but tend to eat much less tha is required to sustain their bodies. As the dieting person eats less food, their stomach begins to shrink and their appetite becomes smaller and smaller, eventually reaching a point where it almost ceases to exist. People that become anorexic through deliberate dieting often engage in rigorous exercise and believe themselves to be in good shape. It is very difficult to get these people to break their self-destructive cycle.
Another way that people turn out to be anorexic is through surgery and illness. Parasitic infections, for example, can cause anorexia due to decrease in appetite. People that get anorexia through accidental means may be concerned over their weight gain, or may view it in a positive light and try to not curtail it, thus leading to their illness. When dealing with people that have anorexia, it's important to have plenty of patience as they likely have an intense fear of gaining weight.
While the above are more physical causes of anorexia, they usually aren't the only reason. The above can be described more aptly as catalysts or wounds for the disease to infect. In reality, anorexia is a mental disorder that is often brought out by weight loss. The reason why women may be concerned about their weight at many, although low self-esteem is the most likely. Due to the constant showing of skinny women in ads and teen bullying, many women grow up with a fear of being anything but skinny. By the time they realize they've become anorexic, it's often too late.
Due to the seriousness of the disease, it's important to act quickly if you suspect you or someone you know may have it. Being anorexic is not a good thing, and while proper dieting is good for losing weight, excessive weight loss can lead to a slew of problems. Organs may break down, and neural activity and health will certainly decrease. It is often impossible for people suffering from the disease to overcome it themselves, so I recommend seeking help immediately.
