How Apple Users Import Camino Bookmarks to Firefox Using Safari

Pam Gaulin
Mac users may rely on more than one browser to work and play online. This quick and easy tutorial explains how to import Camino bookmarks into Firefox. It involves using another popular browser for the Mac, Safari.

A Note on Compatibility

For Apple users the Safari browser for Apple may not do everything they need it to online, especially if they're not using the latest beta version of Safari.

The latest version of Safari 3. Safari 2.14 is still in public beta, which may be why my brand new iMac with its 2.4 GhZ Intel Core 2 Duo and 1GB of memory came installed with 2.0.4.

For this reason it is very possible that some Apple users turn to other free browsers for the Mac, including Camino and Firefox.

The three browsers are not all compatible with each other, which is why I had to come with an easy way to import my bookmarks into Firefox, from my browser of choice, Camino.

How to Import Camino Bookmarks to Firefox Using Safari

If you are mainly using Camino as your browser, and want to upload your bookmarks to Firefox here is an easy way to do that.

Step One: Camino

1. Open the Camino browser.

2. Go to File.

3. Scroll down and click on on Export Bookmarks. (IMAGE 1)

4. The Save box will pop up. Note: The default location for Export is the desktop. The default name for the file will be called

ExportedCaminoBookmarks.html

Click Export. You can change the file name to something different if that is easier for you.

5. Verify that the file is on your desktop. It will have the compass symbol on it and the .html extension.

Step Two: Safari

1. Open the browser.

2. Go to File.

3. Scroll down and click on on Import Bookmarks. (IMAGE 2)

4. The Import box pops up. Find the file on your desktop. Click Import.

5. Verify the bookmarks are there.

Step Three: Firefox

Open Mozilla Firefox.

1. Go to File.

2. Scroll down and click on on Import Bookmarks. (IMAGE 3)

3. Firefox lists three choices for locations of Import files: Safari, Microsoft Internet Explorer, and Netscape 6, 7. Click on Safari. Click Continue

4. Choose which folders to import. Click Continue.

5. The next box that comes up reads "done."

Now you have successfully imported your Camino bookmarks into Firefox, using Safari.

Thanks! This worked for me -- simple, straightforward and clearly written.
    Cheers!

The way using Safari is _not_ needed when you want to use Firefox 3. Simply export the Camino bookmarks as HTML-file. Than open FireFox, open the bookmark view and choose "Import HTML" from the menu with the bookmark-star. Finished.

Thanks, Gabriel. I did not want to delete my FireFox bookmarks. since I use FireFox for certain web sites. Thanks for the alternative solution for those who won't mind overwriting FireFox bookmarks.

I used an easier solution which did not involve Safari:

When you save the Camino bookmarks place them directly into the profile directory (Library->Application Support->Firefox->...etc...) as the file bookmarks.html
WARNING: Naturally this will overwrite the existing bookmarks of Firefox whereas the procedure described above will merge them!
