Different ways to apply eye shadow:

Effortless
Use a base color to cover the entire eyelid all the way up to the brow. Apply a colored eye liner that goes with your outfit, apply the liner to the top and the bottom lash line. On the bottom lash line bring the liner halfway across to the pupil form the outside of your eye. To soften the look you may want to smudge the liner on the outer corner.

Uncomplicated
With your chosen base color apply to the eyelid all the way up to the brow, then with a glitter stick or plain eye shadow draw a thin line of eye shadow across the whole of the upper lid close to the lashes, continue with a liner or glitter stick to the under lashes to the pupil.

Two colors
With your chosen base color apply to the eyelid all the way up to the brow. Use your second color from the lash line up to the crease in your eye. Finally add your eye liner and smudge in the corners for depth and softness.

Three colors
With your chosen base color apply to the eyelid all the way up to the brow. Use the second color and from the outer corner of the eye up to the pupil make a triangle with the color, this would normally be your darkest color. Blend these two colors really well.

With the third color, this would be paler than the second color but not as light as the base, this would go above the triangle, you will need to smooth off the edges. The effect of this style is that you are drawing attention to the center of the eye with the lighter shade. Blend all the colors well.
