How to Apply for Food Assistance in Houston, Texas

Food Stamps, WIC, Supplemental Foods, Food Banks and More

Y! Lyn
Are you having a hard time meeting grocery obligations for your family? There is help in many forms. Food Stamps (now known as SNAP), WIC, CSFP, food banks, and more are available to Houston residents who meet the income guidelines and program qualifications. If you have never had to ask for help before, it may all be confusing. The following will help instruct you on how to apply for food assistance in Houston, Texas.

What are the Qualifications and What Documentation do I Need?

Each program has different qualifications. Most require that your income be at or below a certain level depending on the number of people in your households. Some programs may only ask for valid identification. However, others will ask for more. Always be prepared ahead of time with proof of income, proof of residence, photo identification, social security cards, outstanding medical bills, immunization records, birth certificates, phone and utility bills, and proof of income. If you are self-employed, be sure that you have your income and expense records. There may also be other requests, but these are the main things usually asked for.

Applying for Food Stamps in Houston

If you are in the Houston area, you can call 2-1-1 on your phone to find out about food stamps and other programs you may qualify for. Visiting YourTexasBenefits.com can also help you figure out if you might qualify for food stamps and other assistance. This free service also includes an office locator so that you know where to apply. If you already know where the offices are, you also can simply go down to the appropriate office to see if you qualify and fill out an application.

Applying for WIC in Houston

This supplemental nutrition program helps educate women, as well as provides certain foods like milk, baby formula, peanut butter, cereal, eggs, fruits and vegetables, and cheese. Pregnant women and those with infants and young children may qualify if they have mid to low income. To apply for WIC in Houston, call (832) 393-5427 or click here to visit the WIC info page on the official City of Houston government website.

Applying for Commodity Foods at the Houston Food Bank

The Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) in Houston provides one box of food per month to eligible families. The foods offered are similar to those in the WIC program. The hotline number is (832) 369-9293. Those interested in registering can go down to the Houston Food Bank at 3811 Eastex Freeway to get registered. There is a 7800 participant maximum, which sometimes necessitates a waiting list. However, if you think you may be eligible, do not hesitate to sign up. The list may move faster than you think. Food Pantries in Houston

If you have already received WIC or CSFP (or don't qualify), you may still be eligible to receive food items from a food pantry. FoodPantries.org has a lengthy list of many food pantry locations throughout Houston. Remember that you'll likely need some type of picture identification and proof of residence. Depending on the pantry, there may be other requirements. Call ahead of time to make sure you are prepared. Also, remember to have transportation, or at least a grocery cart, bike, baby stroller, or even a helpful friend to transport your food items. Some pantries are generous with their donations, which is great for your family - but only if you can carry them home.

I know some people will disagree with me but seriously, sometimes people need to swallow their pride and take advantage of some of the programs that are available to them. After all, most of us have paid into the program for years and years, and even if some of these people haven't, as long as they truly are not taking advantage of the system, let them allow themselves to take from it now, and give back later when they can.

Excellent guide, and very helpful for those in need I'm sure. Many people are too embarrassed to ask for assistance to begin with, and this is only compounded by the fact that they don't know where to go to get it.
