How to Apply Foundation

C. A. Hargreaves
There is a staggering amount of foundations out on the market today, and you are left wondering what type of foundation should you be using? Well this really depends on your skin coloring, skin type and any skin conditions. The reason we were foundation is to even out our facial skin coloring and to cover any imperfections, as well as providing an environmental barrier.

Another point to consider before you purchase a foundation is what type of base you like. Do you want a light, medium or heavy base. Obviously if you have going to be on camera or photographed you will need a heavier base than if you were going to do the shopping.

Foundation Colors

Translucent or light skin tone colors: soft peach, creamy pink beige or light warm beige.

Medium skin tone/colors: rose beige, soft beige/tan, a cool beige or sun bronze.

Dark tone/coloured: deep peach, dark beige, sun bronze or luminous light olive (suitable for colored skin)

Skin Types and Condtions

Dry and mature: cream or moisturized emulsions.

Dry and sensitive: cream or oiled based.

Combination skin: Liquid, semi-fluid or all-in one foundation

Oily skin: Non-oily, astringent or water based (combined). Cake or block type, suspended liquid.

Blemished/acne: medicated liquid or block

Allergic/hypersensitive: Hypo-allergenic.

Application of Foundation

When applying foundation to your face it is best that you use a dry/wet makeup sponge for a natural look. Start at the nose to check, repeat this process on the other side of the nose. Next apply foundation over and around the mouth, and then the jawbone, you will need to carry this on to about halfway down your neck. Move back up to eyes, you will need to shut your eye to cover the lid with a light layer of foundation, and then proceed on to the forehead. It is important that you blend the hairline; you don't want your foundation to look like a mask.

You have now got the foundation on your entire face, you know need to go over all of the foundation to make sure it is all blended and to make sure that you have not missed any spots. Also while you are checking to make sure that the foundation is well blended you will want to make sure that all the fine hair on your face is brush downwards and outwards to the hairline.

The foundation is applied before Loose Powder and Concealer.
