How to Apply Simple Feng Shui Tips in Your Home

Jessica Ann
Over the years I have tried to use some of the Feng Shui philosophy in my home, but it can get a little confusing sometimes to determine what works and what doesn't not to mention the actual position of certain rooms in my home. I have found that sometimes it is completely impossible to do exactly what is necessary to accomplish a true Feng Shui room, let alone an entire home. However, here are a few simple things that you can do to get a little closer to a good energy in your home and a few things that will take you much further away from obtaining harmony.

Let's cover a few dos and don'ts for the bedroom as this is usually the place of the most spiritual turmoil which can be easily resolved with a few changes. First off never ever turn your bedroom into your office. It may be comfortable to sit on your bed and do your work at the end of the day, but this is just creating bad energy that will effect everything else in your life. Another no-no in the bedroom, which I am very guilty of, is having papers all over the place. This is where I collect and store all my bills, etc. This is a very bad idea and I should know this, though for some reason have not rectified it yet, as I usually glance at the pile every morning and every night which I know is just creating tension for no reason. The bedroom is the worst place to have so may distractions. This would also include exercise equipment, electronics of any kind, photos of anyone other than your spouse not to mention all the nonsense stored under your bed. Get rid of it all and enjoy a more productive, heh heh, and more peaceful room for blissful slumber. You also want to stay away from any fire element colors in the bedroom, however a small amount of red somewhere in the bedroom can help if you're feeling a lack of passion in that room. You also want to stay away from having any water fountains or aquariums in your bedroom as they are also major Feng Shui no-nos, as also are bonsai plants and cacti. Some things that you can do in the bedroom is have symbols of love, such as statues of couples or a pairing of some sort. Also set the mood of the room by keeping it scented with lavender or cinnamon. You should also make sure that you can't see your reflection in a mirror in the bedroom while you're lying in bed. If you can, move the mirror or eliminate it altogether.

Speaking of plants, I think we all know that bamboo is one of the most popular Feng Shui cures. The reason that the plant is considered lucky is that it combines all of the five elements being, wood (the bamboo itself), Fire (this is why you should tie a red ribbon around it or the pot), Earth (the rocks that you always see bamboo growing in), Water (duh, do I have to say it?) and Metal (the planter that the bamboo should be grown in - if not place a metal coin or figurine in the pot). The other trick to this lucky plant is the number of shoots it has. If it has two stalks, it is for love and marriage, three stalks you can count on happiness, five stalks for health, eight stalks for wealth and abundance and nine is an overall good number for good fortune and happiness.

If you are one of the people, like me, that bought a table top fountain because it is considered "zen" then you want to know the dos and don'ts of using your fountain to work within the harmony of your Feng Shui set up. You should always set your fountain in the North area of your home, office or living room. If your front door faces North, East or Southeast, then you definitely can place a fountain at the front door, but not if it faces any other direction. In this respect though, do not put a fountain to the right of the front door as you are looking out as this is said to cause the man of the house to, let's just say, use someone else's fountain for a while. Again, never put on in the bedroom, even if the sound of water helps you fall asleep, as this can aide in causing breathing problems, colds and other ailments. You also don't want to place the fountain anywhere that you can hear it while you are in your bedroom as you can still be afflicted with problems. If you have a stairway in your home, do not put the fountain underneath or near it as this can cause misfortune to any children living in the home.
