How to Apply for a Small Business Grant in Virginia

Lea Barton
Do you want to open your own business but you don't have the cash flow to make it possible? Why wait until you save the money to start a business when in Virginia you can get a grant for start-up costs and more? Aside from start-up costs, if you have an existing small business that needs more capital funds, or you want to expand, you can get a grant for Virginia businesses. Writing a grant application for a business grant in Virginia isn't easy, but it is possible to become one of those business owners who receives a grant.

Start with the Small Business Administration in Virginia. Make sure you look at all of the grants you can find; the more grants that meet your business's needs and that you apply for, the better chance you will have of receiving the grant you need.

Choose the grants for small businesses in Virginia that you want to apply for; the Virginia Small Business Development Centers can help you and provide grant writing assistance. Read through the guidelines and eligibility requirements carefully.

Write your RFP. RFP stands for "request for proposal," which is where you request your business grant and offer a copy of your business plan. The Free Management Library has a sample business plan for your to use as a template.

Email or mail the grant proposal by the deadline to the grant agency or committee. Some small business grants in Virginia, for instance, will reduce business property taxes through the Business Incentives program. The requirements for this grant will be different than those for an energy upgrade grant, for example.

Wait for a response. The grant committee may send you a rejection or an acceptance and explain the terms of the grant. If you do not get a grant the first time keep trying.

Make sure that you are applying for a grant from a legitimate foundation or organizations. Your business plan needs to have clear financial information and must pass muster; write it as if you were a loan officer reading through the application. Would you lend your business money?

Never pay money for a list of grants; internet search engines and information from small business advisors will point you in the right direction. If you apply for a grant and you do not fit their guidelines, grant administrators will not even look at your application and it will be a waste of your time and effort to apply.

Wrong! SBA and SBDC will not assist you with writing an app and getting a small business grant. Federal small business grants only exist for R & D that the government wants. You can't get a grant for just opening any business.
