H. Porter
When it's time to apply for unemployment benefits, the last thing you need is a hassle. While you may feel embarrassed, remember that unemployment benefits are there for deserving individuals who are not working due to no fault of their own. In Alabama, the process is fairly straight-forward, but there are some critical steps to make sure you get benefits in a timely manner with minimal hassle. There are also a few different options along the way, so read on for the important information you'll need to get the benefits you deserve.

1. Determine Your Eligibility -
To be eligible for unemployment benefits in Alabama, you must meet the following requirements:
- You must be residing in the U.S.
- Your unemployment must not be your own fault (i.e. not because you quit or were fired for misconduct).
- You must be mentally and physically able to work. Sickness or injury cannot be the reason why you are not employed.
- You must be prepared and available for work during each week you collect unemployment benefits. You need to be actively seeking work and willing to accept full time work in the field of your expertise/training should it be offered.
- You must be available for and attend all required interviews and work reviews arranged by your local office.

2. File for Unemployment Benefits -
In Alabama, you have two options for the initial process of filing for benefits:
1. Online using the application at the website listed at the end of the article under "sources".
2. By phone at the Initial Claims Line at 1-866-234-5382.

3. Be Prepared -
Have the following documentation and information on hand when you contact unemployment services:
- Your Social Security number
- If you're not a U.S. Citizen, your work authorization number
- Your Drivers License or state-issued ID card number
- Your mother's maiden name
- The name, current address, and dates of employment for your most recent employer
- If you are a military member separating from service, you will need the "member 4 copy" of your DD214 form

4. Be Patient -
Easy to say, right? The benefits you qualify for will be calculated based on a number of factors. Getting unemployment benefits is not an entirely easy process, and keeping them will require concerted effort on your part including weekly check-ins and, of course, maintaining an active search for work.

Information to consider:
- In Alabama, the minimum amount of unemployment benefits you can qualify for is $45.00 per week, and the maximum is $255.00.
- Immediately start the process once you're no longer working. Your unemployment claim will be effective starting the Sunday proceeding the day you file for benefits.
