How to Apply Wallpaper to Windows Without Trim Board

Wallpaper Around Windows

Trim is a thin narrow type of wood that is used around all 4 sides of a window to help keep cold air out and heat in. Trim also adds a finished look to the window and adds to the rooms decor. When paint or wallpaper is added to the room the edge of it runs along the edge of the window trim. When a window does not have trim the edge runs along the edge of the window frame. The edge of the wall where previous trim was may need repair in order for the wallpaper to lay smooth and flat on it.

Step 1

Use a hammer to tap remove any nails that stick out from the wall surface. Use the claw end of the hammer to remove nails by hooking the nail into the open end of the claw then applying downward pressure to the handle of the hammer, vertically, along the stud. Use a cordless drill to remove any screws.

Step 2

Fill a small mud pan with sheetrock mud. Use a small mud knife to smooth the mud into any cracks, spaces, or gaps between the edge of the wall and the window frame. Use a paint brush to apply a thin layer of mud to the wall along all of the edges where the wall and window meet, working from the window edge out towards the wall, covering a 3 to 4 inch wide strip around the windows perimeter. Allow the sheetrock mud to dry for 2 hours then sand using a fine grit sanding block to make it smooth.

Step 3

Use a tape measure to find the height of the wall. Plan to run the edge of the wallpaper right along the edge of the window, for the entire height of the wall. Use a straight edge and a marking pencil to create a cut line on the backside of the wallpaper then cut it using a utility knife.

Step 4

Use a wallpaper pasting brush to apply a 1/16 inch layer of wallpaper paste to the backside of the wallpaper. Hang the wallpaper with the edge of the wallpaper perfectly even with the edge of the window.

Step 5

Use a soft cloth to smooth any ripples or air bubbles out from underneath the wallpaper, working from the wall edge of the wallpaper over to the window edge.

  • It's simple.
  • Apply the paste.
  • Hang the wallpaper from ceiling to floor along the edge of the window frame.
It's just like hanging wallpaper when there is trim board, but easier, no cuts need to be made for the trim.
