How to Approach a Small Bathroom Remodel in an Older Home

What to Do when Your Small Powder Room or Guest Bathroom Doesn't Cut it Any Longer

M.G. Hardiman
Life is crowded in a 1929 expanded American Bungalow and yet wasn't it the small pink-and-black bathroom that originally caught my eye? "How cute," I thought at the time, falling in love with the idea of a small, older home rather than the challenges that would present themselves over time. Over the years, the small bathroom just seemed to get smaller. And smaller. But, it never got the kind of attention it needed because, in an older home like ours, there's always something else, something more serious, to repair, improve upon or remodel.

If you own an older home like I do, chances are you'll eventually set your sights on a small bathroom remodel. Of course, it won't be easy when so many other items take priority on your home improvement or remodel list. But, fortunately for you and your family, the small bathroom that has just enough room for a toilet, tub and a sink may not be all that expensive when it comes time to refresh or remodel. Plus, your small bathroom may play a central role on the main floor of your home, hardly a place for neglect, out of date fixtures or disrepair.

Ready to start on your small bathroom remodel? Check out these ideas on how to approach a small bathroom remodel in an older home. Sure to make your little gem a focal point on the main floor of your older home.

Small Bathroom Remodel Tip 1. If you can't remodel, refresh. Sometimes redoing your powder room or guest room isn't in the cards. When that happens, you can still refresh the room with a new shower curtain, towels, rugs and more.

Small Bathroom Remodel Tip 2. If you can't remodel, repaint. A small powder room or guest bathroom scores big points when repainted. And, what's more? It won't break the bank.

Small Bathroom Remodel Tip 3. Redesign your small bathroom with the rest of the home in mind. If you live in an older home, you can't go modern with your small bathroom remodel. On the other hand, it's the older condition of the bathroom which is probably causing you and your family some grief. Consult with a designer or bathroom contractor on ways you can integrate your home's design elements into the bathroom remodel.

Small Bathroom Remodel Tip 4. Don't forget your bathroom storage needs. Pedestal sinks and low profile bathroom mirrors look great. But, you may not want to sacrifice storage for style points. Don't forget to include storage into your small bathroom remodel design.

Small Bathroom Remodel Tip 5. Get rid of the tub. Many small bathrooms include a fairly large tub and shower combination which may be unused and taking up much needed space. Although it's difficult to say goodbye to the charming old tub, what you gain in aesthetics, storage and space will be worth it in the long run.
