It is common to see many children suffer from sleeplessness. There may be many reasons for this. I have listed some of the reasons here along with an indication of how you can use aromatherapy in the situation.
Fear of darkness - It seems to be common among children who have nightmares and then wake up to find themselves in a silent, dark room. Install an oil burner near the bed. It has a gently glowing light while it releases a soothing aroma, thereby creating a safe atmosphere.
The sedative oils you can use in this case are frankincense, benzoin, chamomile, neroli, vetivert, patchouli, sandalwood, rose, myrrh, marigold, clary sage and ylang-ylang. Experiment with them until you can find a blend which your child likes.
Hyperactivity - Hyperactive kids usually have difficulty getting to sleep. You can try the aromatherapy procedure described below.
Put in ten drops of oil of chamomile to a bath that has been filled three-quarters. Motivate your little one to soak in the solution for quite some time. Provide games or toys to hold his or her attention, or you can also read out a story.
Then massage seven drops of oil of chamomile into your kid's shoulders, back, chest, and tummy. You need to do this procedure after drying your kid and in a standing pose and try to make the movements soothing.
You can also use benzoin and chamomile oils in a vaporizer placed in the bedroom. You can massage some drops of this blend on your kid's forehead with gentle strokes as you read a bed time story.
Excitability - Kids can get very motivated about certain holidays or events. They tend to get very excited and do not sleep properly exhibiting short tempers and irritability.
You can add any sedative oil to your kid's bath. You can also use it in a burner/vaporizer placed in the bedroom. You can sprinkle some drops of ylang-ylang oil or chamomile over the pillow.
Anxiety and Fear - Kids can lose sleep because of anxiety or fear. The reason may be an upcoming test or a trip to a dentist or some other such cause.
The oils that you can use in this situation are thyme, bergamot, neroli, geranium, marjoram, lavender and chamomile.
You can put these oils in the bath, and you can also use them in a burner/vaporizer. They can help even when inhaled from the bottle itself. Neroli seems to be effective when used in this manner.
