How to Get Around in New York City
Neighborhood: New York City
New York, NY 10003
United States of America
When you travel to New York City, whether on business or for pleasure, you have a wealth of options relating to transportation in the city. Here's how to get around.

Walking in New York City
Much of New York City is laid out in a grid. Many streets numbered in numeric order, which makes it very easy to get around on foot. Avenue names have corresponding numeric names, but they can get a little confusing. For instance, Avenue of the Americas is also known as Sixth Avenue. Pick up a New York street map to help you, in case you end up confused in the village or lost in Queens.

Taking Taxis and Car Services in New York City
Taxis are available all around the island of Manhattan, day and night. However, it can be difficult to hail on at peak times. There is far less availability of taxis in the outer boroughs, so taking a taxi to get around in that area of NEw York City is less of a possibility. Car services are basically drivers that you hire to pick you up and drop you off. This is a good service to use if you have to be somewhere at a certain time.

Using the Subway and Buses to Get Around in New York City
One great way to get around in New York City is by using public transportation: subways and buses. Beneath New York City is a busy, bustling world of the subways. The subway in New York runs 24-7, but some lines do have shut down periods. Buses are also readily available for transportation in New York City. Be sure to consult the MTA website for information on lines you will be traveling. Using a Metrocard, which is necessary for the subway, will also work for MTA buses that crisscross the city. The Staten Island Ferry is a good method of getting to Staten Island.

Driving a Car in New York City
Driving around New York City isn't for the tame of heart. It also can be complicated to locate parking, since street parking -- particularly in Manhattan -- is at a premium. Beware of alternate side of the street parking, as you will get ticketed if you are on the wrong side on the wrong day. Alternative side of the street parking means that you can only park on certain sides of the street on certain days. Parking garages can be pricey, but are available. If you will be in one of the boroughs, driving is a good option.
