How to Arrange Seating in a Small Living Room

A Seating Arrangement for Cramped Quarters

Do you live in a tiny house or apartment where there are times when the walls seem to be closing in on you? Do you have to decorate your small space in order to fit visitors comfortably but have no ideas short of putting chairs on the roof? There are ways to arrange comfortable seating in small living areas to include a number of visitors comfortably. When decorating your living area, keep in mind this is your home and you need to be comfortable first and foremost. When you have limited space you want to choose furniture accordingly. For example, if you are trying to make enough room to comfortably entertain and seat six to eight guests, you do not want to have a large bulky sofa in the middle of the room. A better idea for a sofa would be to choose something smaller. Light springy colors tend to make a room look larger than it is. Keep this in mind as well when picking out furniture. The dark colors often make living areas appear smaller.

I choose a flowered color love seat for my living room. The background is a creamy color and the flowers are several shades of pastels. When choosing a place to put the love seat, I examined the room. I choose to place the sofa against the wall opposite the window. The reason for this was because when the sun shined in, it gave the living room an ambiance that reminded me of being outside. By placing the love seat up against the wall as far as it would go gave extra room for adding more furniture for added seating.

When choosing chairs for my living area I wanted them to match my love seat. Again I was going for something a little less bulky and a little more convenient for the area I had. Since only two people could fit on the love seat, I wanted at least four other permanent chairs for company. With comfort in mind, I choose two gliders that matched my sofa, a family rocking chair and a small recliner for comfort.

When placing the chairs in the living room, I wanted the room to look natural and not over crowed. Since the second largest piece of furniture was the recliner, I chose to caddy corner the recliner beside the love seat on the left in a corner. This way whoever sat in the recliner could lay it back if they wanted. Beside the recliner I put the family rocking chair. For extra comfort I added a matching blanket over the top of the rocking chair. The blanket could be used in the seat or as a cover. I then put the two gliders against the window. The cushions in the gliders matched the cushions on the love seat.

I also chose not to put any type of table in the living room floor. I chose to leave this space empty so the room would look bigger.

When decorating the wall, less is always more when you are looking for added space. Though pictures are wonderful to have, sometimes you need to not put up so many pictures. Switch the pictures out every couple of months so your eyes to not get bored.

I also have a few folding chairs in case I run out of seating in the living room. There is not much space left but there is enough to walk and to fit about two folding chairs if the need arises. Placing chairs against walls will free up needed space in small living areas. I hope your living room comes out perfect!
