For most up-and-coming artists, having their work shown in a gallery is a big deal and an important stepping-stone. You don't have to live in a big city to have a chance at getting your art shown in a gallery. In fact, you may be surprised by how many options you have in your local community. This article will teach the steps necessary in order to have your artwork shown in a gallery.

Step 1. Find local galleries

Search online and in the Yellow Pages to find all of the local art galleries in your city. Make a list of the galleries along with their phone number and address.

Step 2. Visit the galleries

Visit each of the galleries on your list and ask them about portfolio submissions. Be sure to inquire about specific guidelines. Be polite and be sure to introduce yourself. You always want to make a good impression because you never know when you might be talking to the person who will decide whether or not to show your work.

Step 3. Assemble your portfolio

Begin assembling a portfolio of your artwork that meets the guidelines and requirements you were given from the gallery. Be sure to only submit your best pieces and that you submit your portfolio in the proper format.

Step 4. Enter juried competitions

Sometimes galleries have sponsored exhibitions called "juried competitions." Check with your local galleries to see if any of them have upcoming competitions. This is a good way to get some eyes on your work. Be wary of false competitions that are only scams to collect entry fees.

Step 5. Join any local art organizations

Becoming affiliated with local art organizations is a great way to network and get your name out there. You can probably find organizations in your area by doing some searching online.

Step 6. Network

Network as much as possible with other local artists and gallery workers. The more people you know who are active in the community the greater your chances will be of having your work shown in a gallery. Spend lots of time frequenting the places local artists in your community typically hangout.

Step 7. Host your own art show

Rent out a venue for an evening to host your own art show and invite other local artists to showcase their work along with yours. This is a powerful networking tool and could attract the attention of the right people who could get your work shown in a professional gallery.
