How to Make it as a Home-Based Business Owner

Running a home-based business is tricky business...I'll admit this much. Right before starting my very own home-based business, I took it for granted that nothing is beyond me. Everything was within my reach and that it would be....well, a piece of cake. But after a decade of running my own business from the comfort of my own home, here are a couple of things I think are important facts for new green-horn home-based business owners to needs to digest.

Financial stability for the first few months to keep yourself alive while your home-based business picks up

As with any other types of brick-and-mortar businesses, you'll need to allocate some time for your business to pick up. You're working completely from home, hence, I would assume you're going to be working completely alone on this. Time is of ESSENCE. You cannot afford to be completely devoid of savings before you start working on your home business. Good financial planning skills might, I'll have to add, come in pretty handy too.

You can't work your home business unless you've got drive and passion

Personally, I wouldn't start a business from the comforts of my own home if I didn't personally feel passionate about it. It would have to be something you have a drive for so that the drive and passion can keep you going for a long time....a lllloooonnnnggg time. As with other types of businesses, there will be ups and downs...and it is during these 'down' times that your passion and drive for your business will keep you alive.

The ability to multitask and delegate as a business owner

I've decided to put both 'multitasking' and 'delegation' together for a very good reason. Most home-based businesses start off as a one-man-show. It's tough. You'll need to learn how to do multiple things at the same time and also learn how to throw jobs that's bogging you down to others who have more time and skill to do them. If you're not good at writing, hire a really cheap freelance writer to write for you. If you're not good with marketing, get your brother-in-law to help you with the presentations. You get the idea.

Socializing online and offline - marketing your home biz

Being in business means that you'll have to network a little online and offline. For me, I market myself BOTH online and offline although I think my strength lies in marketing myself online because I tend to 'socialize' better that way. Time, as you will see, is short when you're a home-based business owner. But this is not to say that you should do what I do...find your own comfort level and work out a schedule that is comfortable for you.

Selling is the key to the success of your home business

When you own your own home business, make no mistake about this - you're going to be doing a whole lot of selling. In fact, someone told me this very early on when I first started writing for a living.... "Learn to sell in your sleep, when you're cooking or when you're mingling with your friends. That's the only way that you can sell naturally. When natural selling comes to you, your home-based business is on its way".

Be unafraid and unabashed to sell. The last thing I am asking you to do is to PUSH sell! It's more like me telling you to learn how to 'pop the question' or 'drop a hint' at the 'right time' and then knowing when to stop. Sometimes, it all bores down to being more confident about your home business...and also being confident in the fact that if you SOFT SELL yourself, not everyone is going to run off. If they do, they're not much of a friend to begin with...and if they're mere acquaintance, at the very least, you've told them what you do for a living.

If they're not interested, let's just leave it at that - but don't forget to get their personal information.

Be sensitive to your customers and help when you can

My first big break came through doing free stuff. Yes, I did things for free, bartered with a lot of people and basically tried to help others as much as I can. Then one fine day, someone emailed me saying that her friend recommended me....and that got me rolling. Other leads to my home-based business came from many other avenues but I will never forget how being sensitive to others in need and the needs of my clients have helped me make more customers.
