How to Ask for that Raise

Top Tips for Getting that Raise or Promotion

More often than not there comes a time in everyone's working life when they have done more than is expected of them, when they outperformed and outshined time and time again. If you are one of these people, then it's time to take action and get a raise that matches the work you do. Of course, getting a raise or promotion is by no means easy but it is by no means impossible either, all you have to do is be prepared and have a plan of action.

Just asking your boss for a raise won't work, simply because what evidence do you have. They may know your good, but if you only have your word then you only really have one leg to stand on. To get that raise you have to back up your claims and provide evidence as to what you have done, what you have achieved, when and why. Having all of this written down proves your worth, and proves your worth more to your company.

Of course, asking for a promotion or a raise has to be carefully planned. It's no good catching the boss on a Friday night last thing before close of business, or on a Monday morning as soon as they get into the office. You need to get an appointment with your boss, get some time to talk about what you have done, and get a chance to show them that you are worth your weight in gold.

Like with most things raises and promotions don't come overnight, you have to put in the work to be fairly rewarded, so keep this in mind.

Here are some more top tips to help you get that raise:

  • 1. Excel in your current role, show that you are a good team member, that you are a hard worker and that you are interested in seeing the company succeed.
  • 2. Undertake projects and tasks that highlight your skills and assets and show your boss just what your made of.
  • 3. Keep pushing for a raise but don't nag your boss. When the time is right you will get that raise or promotion you deserve, so don't pressure them too much, try a soft approach instead.
  • 4. Having and using initiative is what gets others the raises and promotions you dream of. So, take the initiative and start working hard to get that promotion or raise you deserve.
