The first thing to do is to check with people in a similar field as you to see how much the average raise is. If you go in asking for too much or too little they will either think you are greedy and egotistical or that you have no self worth. After getting that information sit down with a pen and paper and list any and all of your accomplishments and contributions to the company.
It is a good idea to have an appointment made to speak with your superior so that they know you are concerned about something and would like to discuss it with them. When the time comes to speak with them assess what kind of mood they are in. If they have had a bad day just forget about asking for a raise and try to have a nice relaxing conversation with them. Also try to avoid asking for a raise if you know that the company is having a rough patch because asking for a raise then will make you look like a greedy person who doesn't care about the well being of the company or your coworkers.
When you finally ask for the raise make your request slightly higher than the amount that you would be happy with. Usually you bosswill want to lower your request by a little bit so by asking for more in advance you should end up happy with the raise.
If your boss rejects your request have a backup plan ready. Ask if instead of a increase in your salary that you would like more paid vacation time, stock options, or maybe a membership to the local gym. Things like these are commonly given to employees that show they are one of the team and that they plan on sticking with the company for a while.
One of the most important things that you have to remember is to stay cool. Do not go into the meeting with an attitude of "I deserve this" because your superior will likely see you as a very egotistical person and will stop you in your tracks in your quest for a raise. Never resort to saying things like "I work harder than anyone else" or "He or she got a raise so I should to." There is nothing that angers a boss or makes you look like someone who shouldn't have the position that you are currently in let alone get a raise.
When you receive your raise do not rub it in anyone's face. Other coworkers will not appreciate the fact that you make more money than them let alone deal with a cocky employee. Finally once you get your raise do not think that you can let up in the amount of work you do. In fact you should try to do a few extra things to show your boss that you really did deserve the raise you received.
