How to Attract Birds to Your Garden During the Winter

One of the delights of winter is attracting birds to your winter garden. If you take these steps, you'll be able to attract a variety of birds to your garden in the winter. You'll notice that you'll have frequent bird visitors to your winter garden and other birds will just pass through to enjoy nature in your yard and then go on their merry way.

Here are some steps to attract birds to your garden during the winter.

Provide a food supply for the birds in your winter garden. If you want attract birds and keep coming back to your garden, you'll have to provide them with lots of food. This is because many birds are constantly looking for food. Small birds are always looking for food during the day. The birds have to know that you're winter garden will provide them the food they need if they stay in the area during the winter.

Make the garden atmosphere as close to the wildlife as you can. Use plants that replicate what you'd find in a wildlife setting. This means incorporating a variety of shrubs in your garden to give the birds a place to nest and find shelter. You should plant shrubs that produce seeds, nuts and berries for the birds to eat. You'll want to plant shrubs that are actively produces these foods throughout the four seasons of the year. Evergreens are one good option for year round food source to attract birds to your winter garden.

Provide birds with cover and shelter in your winter garden. Birds need a place to sleep and nest. You can provide shelter with several bird houses placed strategically throughout your garden. You can make the bird house has a homemade project or buy one from the store. Birds can also find cover in trees and shrubs.

Provide the birds with water in your winter garden. A running fountain is the best bet for your winter garden because the constant running water keeps the water from freezing. If you can't afford a running fountain, you can use a birdbath in your winter garden to attract birds. The birdbath should be no deeper than three inches deep. There are heated birdbaths available if you can afford one.

If you provide birds with food, shelter and water, you'll attract a variety of birds to your garden throughout the winter. This will provide hours of bird watching fun for you and your family.
