1) Provide Quality Content
"Quality over quantity" is a motto that should be in every website owner's mind. As such, editing and proofreading are two prerequisites. Before you publish anything, make sure that your content is as typo-free as possible.
2) Provide Useful Content
A website is like a product. If you want to "sell", your content and articles must be unique. At times, it may be difficult to come up with new ideas. To overcome this problem, you could:
-Set up Google alerts to receive news in your inbox. When you find an interesting article, share an extract in your website's blog or write something on the topic.
-Visit websites like AllTop or Mashable and subscribe to valuable blogs in your niche.
And if you are an entrepreneur, why not check out the questions asked by members of LinkedIn? Some will fuel your creativity.
3) Update Your Website Often
When your website is updated often, it stays high in search rankings. As a result, you have a better chance to be found on the Internet. So, try to contribute to its growth at least twice a month.
4) Ask Questions
Asking questions is the best way to engage visitors and show them that you care. You can run polls and surveys directly on the main page or in a specific area of your website. Your goal is to grab visitors' attention to make their experience on your website unique.
5) Keywords
SEO is extremely important. Keywords are specific words used to describe a website. It helps search engines to find you. When people enter a search term in Google, Bing or Yahoo, results appear in order of relevance. Without specific keywords that describe your website/services well, it is very likely that you will never reach the top of the search pile.
6) Share on Social Networking Sites
Many bookmarking/social networking sites can help you thrive on the Internet. Twitter, Facebook, Myspace, Digg, Delicious, and Stumble Upon are excellent and search engines love them. Use Hootsuite and Ping.fm to update all your networks at once.
Posting an ad on Craiglist may also help.
7) Offer a Free Newsletter to Your Visitors
Newsletters are a good way to keep your visitors updated on the growth of your business. You can also provide useful information that you would not share on your website, hence making subscribers feel as though they were part of a special group.
MailChimp is an excellent free service that gives any website owner a lot of flexibility. And the benefits are truly awesome.
8) Submit Articles to Directories
Your website is part of your brand. But before people start trusting it enough to purchase your products, you need to establish yourself as a reliable source of information. EzineArticles and eHow are among the best article submission directories right now and rank really high in search engines.
9) Answer Comments and Visit Other Websites and Blogs
Too often, website owners and bloggers do not follow up with readers' comments or e-mails. They do not even take the time to visit others' pages.
Imagine a company that would pay no attention to its customers. It would lose business very quickly. On the Internet, your website works like your business card; it showcases your company. If you do not set aside some time to provide good customer service, you will get no traffic.
Should you really have no time to connect with those who contact you privately, just let them know that you will respond to their messages later. And make sure that you do!
10) Add a Link to Your Website in Your Signature
In this day and age, we all use e-mails. It takes a couple of seconds to add a link to your website/blog in your signature block. And it may bring a LOT of traffic.
Do not forget to add the link to your website in every comment you make in blogs, guestbooks, etc., as well as in your online profiles. It is a useful way to build backlinks. Backlinks help build credibility on the Web.
11) Be patient
Solid and constant traffic does not happen overnight. So, continue working hard and do not lose heart. "Good things happen to those who wait".
