Halloween and the holidays is always a feast. There are all kinds of food on the table (and everywhere) that we all have a tendency to eat and taste everything that we can. There is nothing wrong with tasting and appreciating a delightful feast during Halloween and the holidays, but try not to over-indulge. Some foods that can cause heartburn are the following : high fat foods, citrus (acidic) fruits, caffeine, alcohol, too much sweets and spicy dishes. Try and avoid these foods, though that may be difficult to do when you see everyone around you deliciously gobbling these delights. Nevertheless, try and taste a bit of each to satisfy your palate but do not overeat. If you are easily tempted by food, you can do one of the following : 1. Eat a little whole grain cereal before going to the party, this will give you a feeling of fullness or 2. If you're doing the cooking, try and add some apple cider vinegar to some of the dishes and salads. Of course, it will also help if you bring your Mylanta or anti-acid medicines but there is nothing better than natural remedies.
Other "cures" are chewing gum when you feel that the heartburn is about to strike. When one chews gum, one produces more saliva and this is good because it "wets" the esophagus and this calms the stomach and lessens the pain. Others solve heartburn by drinking hot ginger tea. Try whatever is the most effective for you.
When acid reflux strikes do not lie down. Instead, try and sit down and relax every part of your body. If you know how to do "progressive relaxation", this is the time to do it. Progressive relaxation is tensing and then "loosening" even part of your body from your foot up to the head so that you can feel the "loosening" of your muscles and this automatically makes you relax. It is an exercise that you can try anywhere. You may also try listening to music or smelling your favorite aromatic oil to make relieve the tension and this usually cures heartburn. Remember that holidays almost always bring stress no matter how much you try and avoid it.
Avoid too much alcohol even if it's the Halloween and everyone seems to be having a great time. If you are prone to heartburn, alcohol and smoking even for social reasons can cause extreme stomach discomfort. Always find some sense of balance when during these festivities.
Halloween and the holidays are supposed to be fun days when you can relax and share your joys with others. Having a heartburn attack during Halloween and the holidays can ruin your celebration. Love yourself, RELAX and have a good time.
