1. If you are a woman and have a male partner bring him with you to talk to the service person. Some mechanics still take advantage of women unfortunately.
2. Before you go to the mechanic ask someone close to you who you think may know more about cars than you. They will give you more information and confidence in talking to the service person.
3. Read your automobile user manual from the back to the front. Increasing knowledge give you more power and less of a chance of getting ripped off.
4. Tell the mechanic that you are just comparing service prices, not that you are making a commitment to take your car there.
5. Look them in the eyes when you talk to them. If they can't give you proper eye contact then they may be trying to hide something.
6. Ask them for your old parts back. This way they can't simply adjust a screw and say that they replaced your whole transmission.
7. Mark your engine parts so that you can tell if they really replaced them or not.
8. Only take your car to an auto-mechanic as a last resort. Determine whether you can do any of the service yourself.
9. Look for reviews of mechanics on the internet.
10. Ask people close to you if they can recommend a trustworthy mechanic.
