How to Avoid Buying from Kids Selling Door to Door

Melanie L. Marten
They are cute. It is for a good cause. And they are storming your house. Every year, hordes of kids go door to door, selling everything from overpriced cookies to holiday wrapping paper. Schools, sports teams, and other organizations always seem to be raising money for something. Unless you are rich and really generous, you need a way to avoid these kids selling door to door.

Avoid Kids Selling Door to Door - Door Bell

The easiest way to avoid buying things from kids selling things door to door is not to answer the doorbell or the knock in the first place. Turn off your lights and hide on the floor. To try to stop them from ringing the bell to begin with, post a sign on your door that says, "No Solicitors."

Avoid Kids Selling Door to Door - Excuses

If you do open the door to one of these smiling kids, and do not want to buy any of the products, you can make an excuse. One great excuse to not buy anything from a door to door child salesperson is to tell them that you already purchased something for that particular cause.

Avoid Kids Selling Door to Door - Voice Opposition

There have been quite a few stories of kids selling door to door who run afoul of bad people who do horrible things to them. One way of getting these sales kids to leave you alone is to voice your opinion that the door to door selling practices are dangerous and should be banned, and that you refuse to support such a flawed system of getting money for band uniforms. What happened to bake sales or swap meets? What happened to car washes and craft bazaars? Let these kids know that you will not now, or ever, purchase anything from an exploited child forced to walk around the neighborhood in the cold hawking cheap goods.

Avoid Kids Selling Door to Door - Supportive

No matter what excuse you give for not buying anything from the kids selling door to door, it is important to be supportive. After all, these kids do not know that they are being annoying. Schools, sports teams, and groups force children to participate in these door to door sales schemes. Tell them that you are not interested in buying anything, but wish them luck. Then lock the door, turn off the light, and hide on the floor in case there are more kids selling door to door coming down the street.

On the contrary, "you people" yeah I sd "you people", are the stuffy, booshie , n.i.m.b.y (not in my backyard) people that are tearing our country apart. You probably never had to get a job as a kid or perhaps, your father, uncle or friend who was well off set you up w/ a nice cushy job w/out even interviewing for it. I have been working w/ kids from deprived neighborhoods for 20 years and have seen them display the sticktoitiveness and perseverance it takes to become a self made success. So the next time you slam the door or hide from one of these kids think about how $5.00- $20.00 that I'm sure will not break you can help the youth of our country continue to strive to better themselves.

LOL. That was very humorous. Of course, what's worse is parents selling stuff at work for their kids!

This is a tongue-in-cheek, slightly humorous response to something many people complain about. I'm so sorry the sarcasm was lost on some people.

You are cruel, It is probaly for a good cause and if you don't want to buy it tell them "No Thank You" it's that simple.

I think you all should be ashamed of yourselves. I have three children ages 5, 7, & 10 and they all love going through the neighborhood selling things and earning prizes. It is and has always been the American way. It also gets the kids off the couch and gives them a chance to get some good exercise. Our country is filled with countless obese adults and a rapidly growing number of children and you people say that kids walking from door to door is bad. What is wrong with you? No one has ever forced my children to sell door to door nor any other child that I know of. I sold door to door when I was little and I couldn't wait for my parents to take me to a knew area once I went to all the houses in my neighborhood. I made good money and was awarded great educational prizes. It taught me how to work for the things I wanted. A lesson that needs to be instilled on so many spoiled rotten kids these days, including all of you apparently!!!

I occasionally have children coming to my door trying to sell me things. But I never have a problem dealing with them. I just tell them plainly that I am not interested in a polite manner and leave it at that. No one should feel obligated to buy anything from a door-to-door saleman/woman, even a cute child.

I should have read this five minutes sooner. I just gave two kids $20.00 who were collecting for the American Heart Ass. The kids in this neighbor are all into do-causes. LOL

a good point you have here - i am glad i don't live in a neighborhood!

I kinda feel sorry for the poor kids in your neighborhood now. LOL. JK. Great job, Melissa.

Another good way to avoid the need for school children to go door to door to raise funds for school related needs is to simply be supportive of your school budget. School budgets are often "bare bones" and only cover minimum classroom needs. In order to provide the kinds of activities and materials parents would like their school children to receive, it is necessary to fund raise.
