How to Avoid Credit Card Debt

MIKE T
It's always nice to have money handy especially during emergencies. This is the feature that a credit card offers - that at any time, even without cash, you can function financially. Because of this, having a credit card has become a necessity. However, no matter how convenient it is to have a credit card, it is not that difficult to fall into bad credit and owing so much money, sometimes even more than your credit limit, to the financial company that gave you the credit card.
Here are some ways to avoid falling into this credit card trap:

As much as possible, pay your outstanding balance in full
Most people have the tendency to pay their credit card bills in parts, or worse, with only the minimum due. Unbeknownst to you, the more you do this the more your payment is eaten up by interest alone. By making partial payments, you are charged interest twice: interest for your outstanding balance and interest for every new purchase. So as best as you can, you should always pay the full amount of your outstanding balance.

Do not use the cash advance feature of your credit card
Most credit cards allow you to withdraw a certain amount. Unfortunately, interest is charge on the very day you make that cash advance and that interest is normally higher than normal. It is advisable that you do not use this feature except for extreme cases like emergencies. If you really need to make a cash advance, try to pay that advance at the soonest.

Be aware of your payment due dates
Especially when you have more than one credit card, it is sometimes impossible to remember when payment is due. It is therefore imperative that you take note of the due dates of each of your credit card. Financial companies usually fine a big amount for late payments and that on top of the interest and you're surely looking at a very significant amount. If this is done consecutively or with more than one credit card, surely, the ability to pay what is required will be difficult which will result in bad credit.

Do not put your credit card at the maximum credit limit
Just because you cannot see the cash going out of your wallet doesn't mean that you are not spending. Most people forget this when using a credit card. They have a tendency to shop at their hearts content forgetting that they will have to pay for it at the end of the month. More often than not, they will not be able to pay the full amount. And as mentioned, partial payment will just put them in the credit card debt trap.

It is always good to remember to keep yourself in good standing when it comes to credit cards and the tips that have been mentioned are your best bet in doing so. Remember, the moment you have a bad credit history, no company will give you a credit card and you can kiss your purchasing power goodbye.
