If you have used public transportation before then you might have experienced or witnessed an unpleasant dispute between customer and bus driver. In many cities where the stress is high and the pace is swift, bus drivers and patrons have a higher tendency to quarrel. Witnessing this experience may have made you a bit hesitant to use public transportation. If public transportation is your only reliable source of commuting then you have no choice but to brave it. Your experience and commute does not have to be a poor one if you follow some simple rules.

You must first realize that bus drivers do have a hard job. Their job may seem easy to you because from your perspective they get to sit on their rear end, stop, go and open doors but they have to deal with a lot of people. They deal with all kinds of people that sometimes take their stress out on them. It requires a great deal of patience to be a bus driver and sometimes their bank of patience runs low on funds and they snap back. You can get the most out of your traveling experience if you try your best not to step on bus drivers' toes. Below are some tips on how not to aggravate a bus driver so that your travel experience is smooth.

Wait for passengers to exit the bus before you board. Some bus drivers become infuriated if you board the bus before passengers get off. They consider this to be extremely rude. It may be hard to see who is getting off of the bus so you should wait at least 30 seconds or so before boarding. Make eye contact with the bus driver and he or she will alert you when it is okay to proceed onto the bus.

Press the button before the bus reaches the stop that you want to get off of. Pressing the button when the bus gets directly at the location of the bus stop will cause the driver to have to quickly put on his breaks which can be dangerous and quite frustrating. It's hard enough for bus drivers to remember every stop on their route. If you want to avoid getting yelled at be sure to press the button before the bus passes the stop that you want to get off of.

Lose the attitude. Bus drivers deal with all kinds of people on a daily basis. In most instances the drivers feed off of the vibe of their passengers. If you do not want to get snapped at remain composed and quiet and move right along even if the bus driver gives you attitude. Always remember to be the bigger person when riding the bus because the bus driver has the power to give you the boot.

Move back when it becomes too crowded. If the bus you take is a popular route then it most likely gets crowded. In this case you want to move back as far as you can. When the bus driver asks people to move back don't just look back and stay in the same spot and pretend to move. You should actually move your body further into the bus. It is illegal for bus drivers to operate the bus if passengers stand before the yellow line so move it on back if you can.

Make sure that you have the exact change. Bus drivers seem to get ticked off when passengers do not have the correct fare. Passengers that do not have the correct fare hold up the line which makes the driver impatient and late. When you board a bus make sure your pass has enough money on it or make sure that you have the correct change. Remember pennies are not acceptable.

If you are sitting on seats that are designated for the elderly and handicapped please get up for them and allow them to sit.
