How to Avoid Heartburn

It Can Be Very Painful, You Don't Have to Suffer

Heartburn is a painful burning sensation in the esophagus just behind the breastbone. Contrary to the name, heartburn really has nothing to do with the heart. It is actually the regurgitation of gastric acid. Heartburn can also be a sign of gastroesophageal reflux disease. There are a few ways you can prevent heartburn.

Eat whole grains- Studies show that eating high fiber foods can cut reflux by up to half, possibly because they soak up the stomach acid before it can creep back up your esophagus. Some great ways to get more whole grains are to switch to whole grain breads and pastas and eat more brown rice and oats.

Take some vinegar- Mixing just one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with eight ounces of water and drinking it before meals can soothe chronic heartburn. The acid in vinegar help food to digest more quickly before it can back up into the esophagus.

Eat slowly- People who dawdle when eating are 32% less likely to suffer from heartburn than those who finish more quickly.

Chew gum- Chewing gum after meals doubles acid-reducing saliva. Don't like chewing gum? No problem, try candied ginger. Ginger speeds the breakdown of fats cutting your heartburn flare-ups by up to 40%.

Dress comfortably- Choose an empire waist dress or loose fitting pants. Too much pressure on the stomach can push acid back up into your esophagus causing heartburn.

Skip your evening nightcap- Studies show that those who have even two alcoholic drinks in the evening are ten time more likely to suffer from heartburn. For a good nights rest don't drink alcohol for at least three hours before bedtime.
