How to Avoid Home-Based Business Scams

Monty Campbell
My sister-in-law recently stated that she wanted to open up a Starbucks. I started to observer Starbucks and other coffee houses more closely after that update. I find the coffee house clients quite interesting. Many people that love coffee are the bubbly type with an energetic loud personality. Some of those same people are grouchy to say the least before they get there coffee. Most say they are not the morning type. The other types that go there are those whom are serious coffee addicts.

Those are the people that really have no time for conversation. They go into the store with little focus on anything but the coffee. They focus on their phone or anything else with little time for conversation. I saw a few novices whom were not part of the Starbucks community.

Similar to me, they didn't understand why coffee had to cost so much nor was familiar with the lingo. The most interesting type to me is the home-based business sales person. It was funny that they would bring someone to Starbucks, but most of them did not even buy their soon-to-be-business-partner coffee. However this brought me to a few questions about the home based business.

When is a home-based business not for you?

If it's a home-based business, I want you to show me your home. Perhaps we can meet someplace other than your home to start. But if you are going to bring me in at the ground level then let me see your foundation. I have often wondered why home based business owners do no show it to you in their home.

I hold that if the business is great enough for you to have other come on board; you should have a business plan that you can show me. You should at least have and executive summary. I would hold that you will have something more than a pretty PowerPoint presentation telling me how this is the beginning of a new industry that is taking the world by store.

To let me see your home is one component of it. But give me an executive summary and scope of what the business mission vision and objectives are. Show me how I fit into the vision and why I should you my home as one of your satellite resources. I want to see the foundation and or the home of the home-based business owner.

Where is your home-based business team?

Most home-based businesses promote the power of team or team building. The key building blocks are you and the people you bring in to the organization. Yet and still most people I've spoken to in home based business say the three things people focus on are their shoes, their watch, and their car.

None of the home based business people I've spoken to really had a lovely home of which to speak. In fact some either rented and apartment, or lived with someone else. I have nothing against living in an apartment. However, if you and your team live in apartments with nice cars and nice watches and nice clothes, I know that it's not the home based business for me

To me, a home-based business is not for me if you cannot show me the home from which you work. If your team also does not have a home, then you are looking at a business that might not give them stability enough to pay a mortgage. Robert Kiyosaki said it best "The Six People whom you most closely associate are indicative of your future." If you associate with 6 friends that smoke weed, you probably smoke weed.

If you have 6 friends whom are married with children, you will most likely become or are married with children. What ever it is you aspire to become, you should surround yourself in that environment in order to foster that in your life. Again, if the team is filled with people who have what you want then it is the right team for you.

When are you spending too much on a home-based business?

When you spend out more money each month than you make, you are loosing in the home-based business game. Most MLM or home-based business programs want you to sign up for a fee to work with their home based business. They feel that you should experience the program by using it if you are to sell it. They are correct in that regard. You should never sell something that you do not full buy into using yourself.

When it comes down to it, you have to put your money where your mouth is. I would never buy a car from a person whom only rides a bike. I would never buy a motorcycle from someone that only drives a car. I would never buy a home from someone those only rents. I would never buy anything from anyone that does not use his or her own products or services.

However, you should not buy all your products all the time. In truth if you are your best and only customer, you really need to reconsider the home-based business. You can just as easily join the home shopping network and call it a business. If you make a small profit each month, that is great. But if you continue to have a monthly charge and no profit, well, you will soon enough learn what that translates into in your wallet.

When is a home-based business for you?

If you are looking for a way to develop your sales skill, then you should try a home-based business program. I know, so far everything I've stated has been against the concept of a home based business. However if you do not want to go cold turkey into sales, a home-based business is a safe inroad to the sales training game. The truth is you will benefit more from the sales training than the actual business

All the successful entrepreneurs I've met have had some home based business experience. Many tried anything at least ones. I had a friend that was a graduate from the 8A Small businesses program because he exceeded the revenues. He had a staff of 150 and was doing exceptionally well. He said that he got his best training from some of the 15 different home based businesses he attempted and failed at in the past. Those "learnings" (failures learned from) taught him what he needed to do to be a success in business.

The entrepreneurs I know mainly tried this business as a hope for success. I was also surprised to know home many of them failed miserably at the opportune time in the opportune market. They joined the companies right when the company was on the verge of breaking into the next level. They became ground floor members of the MLM (multi level marketing) program. As a whole they were miserable failures in the MLM home based business, but became great successes because of what they learned. They didn't let the failure stop them. They kept inspired and kept selling.

Again that is just my take on what home based business not to get into unless you are looking for sales training. Home based business are great for those whom are disciplined introverted self motivated self-starters. For most people, it becomes a challenge to do what must when you can simply do what you want. You must take a personal inventory before you really seek a home based business opportunity.

If you do decided to go into a home based business with someone you meet at Starbucks, I hope you at least get them to pay for coffee.

I hope you have a blessed and prosperous day.

You say in the beginning there is nothing to pay......then a few pages later there is a fee.....a one time fee. Just like all the other scams. Sorry I looked at your site.
