How to Avoid Overfeeding Your Fish

Shannon Frye
There are many different problems that can result from over feeding your fish. You want to keep the feeding down to a minimum. You do not want to overfeed the fish because that will create a number of problems. I would suggest feeding the fish the first time to see how much they all eat. Do not feed them more than this amount. The excess food will just sit at the bottom of the tank. You want to feed the fish twice per day in small amounts. If your water gets really cloudy you will know that you are feeding your fish too much food.

Feeding your fish too much food will result in increased nitrate levels. This is because the food is sitting at the bottom of the tank and starting to decay. The excess food will produce waste in the water and it will cloud up the water and cause the levels to rise. High levels in your fish tank will kill off all of your fish or cause them to get sick. The more that you feed your fish the more they will go to the bathroom in the water. This means that it will produce waste in the fish tank which will in turn cause your ammonia levels to rise and pollute your fish tank.

Overfeeding your fish will lead to unhealthy and stressed out fish. If some fish eat too much they will actually stop eating all together until they die. It's kind of like when you and I eat too much and then we never want to eat or look at food again. The fish will completely stop eating all together and there's nothing that you can do. If the fish eat too much they will become unhealthy. It will get harder for them to move around and swim around the fish tank. They will get stressed out because they cannot swim as well and then they will become sick. It's hard to treat a tank full of sick fish.

Another thing that can happen is your fish can get constipated. Constipation is often times a big problem. Constipation will cause swim bladder problems which means that the fish can no longer stay swimming in the right direction. The fish might swim in circles. The fish might not be able to come up to the top of the fish tank. The fish might also be swimming upside down. Since the fish is so full, the swim bladder will get pressed against, causing the fish to swim differently. You will want to fast the fish, or avoid all food for at least 2 days until you see all of the fish are starting to go to the bathroom again.
