How to Avoid Overfeeding Your Pet

Mrs. Renee

In recent years it's not just the health of people that many are concerned about, it is also the health of their pets. Have you ever seen an overweight cat, or dog? Some may think that a fat pet is a healthy pet, but many veterinarians tend to disagree. In fact many of them feel that the pet's life may be at risk. So how can you keep your pet healthy, and avoid overfeeding them? Below you will find a few easy to follow ideas and suggestions, which are primarily for dog and cat owners.

What is a healthy weight

The first thing you can do is to determine what exactly is a healthy weight for your pet. Take the time to speak to your vet to find out where your pet should be weight wise. By monitoring your pets weight you will be able to make sure that they stay within healthy limits. Monitoring your pets weight on a monthly basis should be good enough to ensure that they are healthy.

Avoid table scraps

Constantly feeding your dog or cat too many table scraps can quickly lead to them taking in too many calories in a day. Instead stick with buying a healthy food for them and feeding them only that. Having your pet eat before you do may help to avoid them begging while you are trying to enjoy your meal.

Check for health issues

In some instances your pet could be suffering from some sort of health issue that is causing them to be overweight. If you are not sure about what is causing your pet's weight gain get them to the vet as soon as possible. This will help to rule out any medical disorder and you can focus primarily on your pets diet.

More exercise

In some cases it could simply be that your dog or cat is not getting the exercise it needs. Of course dogs you can take for a daily walk. When it comes to your cats, it is probably best to make sure that you take the time to play with them. This will make sure that they are getting the exercise that they need.

Check your dog food

Take the time to check the ingredients on your pets food. It could really be as simple as switching your pet to a healthier brand to get them back to a healthy weight. If you suspect your pet's food of adding the extra weight, then you can switch foods and continue to monitor their weight. Make note of any changes you see. Perhaps keeping a journal for your pet where you can record the day and their weight may help you to get your pets weight under control.
