The most important thing that one can do is create a budget and stick to it. Look at what you would like to spend on gifts and do not go over that budget. It is easy to think that one can go over budget, however, when you do, it puts you in a situation where you are not being honest with yourself about your financial situation. Therefore, you have not only broken the budget, but you have been dishonest with yourself, which means you cannot trust yourself to do the right thing every time you walk into a shopping center. Additionally, you have created the possibility of putting yourself in debt for the holiday.
More so, create a shopping list of names for those that you are gifting at Christmas, and a minimum spending amount for each person. It is important to know who you will be shopping for so that you won't leave anyone out and you don't overspend.
Schedule your shopping days, so that you can avoid last minute shopping, which can become very costly.
Additionally, shop when there is a sale. During the Christmas holiday there are always sales, and an increasing amount of fliers sent out daily, advertising bigger and better savings at large department stores as well as mom and pop shops. Take advantage of the endless number of sales out there over the Christmas season and use it as a medium to save.
Do not use credit, which brings us back to the importance of budgeting for the Christmas season. When we use credit, it is difficult to monitor what is spent. More so, when a huge balance is charged to one's credit account, you will find yourself paying an endless amount of finance charges, over limit fees and interest on your balance. Plus you are spending what you don't have. In addition, you are spending more in interest than on the principal balance.
At the end of the day, it's important to be cognizant of one's spending habits and to be realistic about one's financial situation. Always justify the reasons for what you are buying when overspending. More importantly, have a conversation with yourself or a discussion with your partner about what you really need, and eliminate or minimize unnecessary buying and spending.
