Let's define dependence: Physical Dependence refers to a patient's need to take a drug. If a patient is dependent, he or she will experience withdrawal symptoms when the medication is discontinued. The dependent user may become tolerant to the medication.
Tolerance refers to a need for increased dosage of a medication or drug to produce the desired result. The body becomes accustomed to the chemical, and the usual dosage is no longer effective.
What types of medications are addictive?
Opioids - these are prescribed for pain relief and are derived from the opium poppy, such as morphine and codeine.
CNS Depressants - (CNS stands for Central Nervous System) These sedatives or tranquilizers are commonly prescribed for anxiety and sleep disorders. The main ingredients are barbiturates and benzodiazepines.
Stimulants - especially those prescribed for ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder), Narcolepsy (a sleep disorder), and Obesity (including diet pills). These contain such chemicals as amphetamines.
How should we take our medications?
You must take the medication for the purpose it was intended. You must take it in the manner prescribed. You must not adjust the amount of medication yourself without your doctor's knowledge. You must not discontinue it without your doctor's knowledge.
Some similar over the counter (OTC) medications, if used improperly, can also lead to dependence. Use them precisely as described on the package label. Do not take these unless there is a legitimate need for them.
Why?
Increasing the amount of medication may lead emotional stimulation, which in turn, may lead to addiction.
Taking more medicine to relieve depression may overstimulate the brain's chemical centers, which may lead to deeper depression. Then a cycle of overuse begins.
Depression medications need to be built up in the system over time for maximum benefits. Stopping them suddenly can lead to stroke and other serious physical complications.
Our inability to function normally while tranquilized will cause problems in our families, at school and at work. Problems that develop will increase our stress and make the whole situation worse.
How do we avoid dependence?
Be aware of the side effects of our medication. Pharmacies will supply us with a list of side effects. If you are experiencing any of these, tell your doctor immediately.
Do not take medications and use alcoholic drinks or over the counter medications without asking your pharmacist or doctor about the drug interactions.
If you have a history of drug abuse, don't be afraid to tell your doctor.
Do not give your medications to anyone else and do not take medications which are prescribed for someone else.
