How to Avoid Scams when Using the Internet for Job Searches

Lee VanAmee
When people are looking for employment online most savvy scammers are waiting in the wings because this person will be vulnerable. Vulnerable people usually believe something in an advertisement that seems like a great deal at the time, but in retrospect tends to sounds very fixed when read at a time when we are stronger. Scammers love desperate people, so if your mindset is desperation it is a perfect match.

That is why you must keep your intuition keen and your wits about you when you look over any offers. Before you even send out an email inquiry or any contact make sure this ad you are reading isn't there just to sell your information or worse! Most of the legitimate newspapers and job websites no longer offer your home address and personal email etc. because scammers were taking advantage of this to steal identities, sell info, or who knows what else, it just isn't safe to put your personal credentials online for all to see any more.

Some of the scammers are so transparent anyone can see they are just trying to advertise their company or website for cheap ad funds, others are more insidious. When the economy is bad, you will see many more "sales" positions being advertised with exorbitant claims and figures as to how much you can make with your commissions. Even employment agencies have been known to bait and switch the positions and salaries they have available. They can be taking advantage of the advertising putting their name out there for you to think they are a popular agency or they could also be fishing for the best of the best candidates and there are slow times when they do not have openings but advertise some old ones to get people in to interview with them. So it is important to remember just because you see an agency plastered all over these websites; it by no means indicates that these companies have any more openings than any of the other agencies.

The best thing to remember to keep you safe from scams is good old common sense. If you think that you are being sold some kind of song and dance that doesn't really seem it will be in your best interest in the long run; by all means ask someone else to see what they think. If a fresh set of eyes looks at a scam and tells you it sounds like someone is only going to take advantage of you; run the other way, it is not worth the effort and heartache!
