How to Avoid Stress in a Freshwater Tank

Shannon Frye
You will want to avoid stress in your freshwater tank. Don't do anything that will stress out your fish. You probably don't know what will stress out your fish. There are a number of things that will stress out your fish. When you stress them out, they are more likely to get sick because their immune system wont function like it normally would. Here are the things that you will want to do to avoid any problems with your fish.

You will want to make sure to clean your tank on at least once every two weeks. You will want to make sure that you change the filter cartridges because the carbon will help to bring down your ammonia and nitrate levels. You will want to clean the glass and remove the algae from the tank. You will need to siphon the rock and remove the uneaten food from the fish tank. Uneaten food will lead to a higher nitrate level which will make your fish get stressed out. Fish usually don't die unless they've been stressed out for a long time or they've had an illness.

Avoid over crowding your fish. You don't want to place too many fish in your fish tank. If you add a lot of fish to the tank this produce more fish waste. That will create a higher ammonia level. The more fish that you have the more waste there will be. There will also be less food for each fish. You want to keep one inch of fish per gallon of water. With a 10 gallon tank you can keep 10 inches of fish. That means you can have ten 1 inch fish. You cannot place one 10 inch fish in a 10 gallon tank however.

You will want to avoid purchasing aggressive or territorial fish. They fish are like the bullies in school. They stress everybody out all of the time. This will lead to many problems in your tank. They fish will chase all of your other fish around until they eventually get worn down, get sick and die. You want to avoid purchasing territorial and aggressive fish unless you place them in a different tank by themselves.

There are a number of things that you can do to make sure that your fish are not stressed out. If you follow all of the guidelines above, you will not have any problems. Also remember that you want to keep the water at a steady temperature. If the tank fluctuates more than 2 degrees per day you will be stressing out your fish which will cause them to get sick.
