How to Avoid Weight Problems with Your Children

Beth Lytle
Weight problems often starts with the child's (and the parent's) eating habits. It's important to encourage children to eat healthy and this can be done at an early age. One mistake many parents make is to make the assumption that a child is going to hate all food that is healthy or to influence their own likes and dislikes onto their children. Never assume that a child will dislike a food, but encourage the child to eat it by telling them that it is really yummy and learning to make it in a way that maybe masks some of the blandness of some foods. Kids will often eat hot vegetables if they are seasoned properly or with a little melted cheese. Fruit makes a great snack and kids love berries, bananas and apples. Serve slices of apple with peanut butter or make peanut butter wraps by slicing up a banana and mixing with peanut butter in a wrapped up tortilla.

Staying active is another big part of having a healthy child. Parents should encourage their children to lead healthy and active lifestyles, instead of just sitting in front of the TV all day. Unfortunately, some parents take the easier route and plunk their child in front of the television so that they can have more time to themselves and get some things done around the house. It's important that children of all ages have a lot of different toys to play with and stay active. Parents can take their children for a walk and instead of putting the child in a stroller, have the child walk around the block. Take this opportunity to hold the child's hand and practice walking in public and looking both ways to cross the street.

Kids always learn by example and parents often have some very bad habits that get passed onto their children. Parents should pay attention to their own eating and exercise habits and attempt to put their best foot forward for their children. If parents are eating healthy food and keeping healthy food around the house, a child won't know anything different. Families should practice outdoor activities together such as hiking, biking and swimming, or even a friendly game of kickball in the backyard. Toddlers love dance and activity and moms and dads can find some relaxation and teach their children about relaxing and stretching by practicing Yoga with their kids or taking a family walk after dinner.

Tip: Baby carrots work great for older kids who are teething and they double as a healthy snack!
