How to Get Your Baby to Stop Using the Pacifier

Getting Rid of a Soother

Burkular
Is it time to get your child to stop using the pacifier? Here are some general indicators.
Once they get their first set of teeth or when they first start to talk.

Cold Turkey is one of the most popular methods, you just take the pacifier away and let them go through this for a couple of days until they wear themselves out.
Another method we were told was to cut the end of the pacifier off and give it to your child. Because there is no longer any suction motion they will not keep it in their mouth. Beware though, once you cut the soother and your child starts to scream you may want to have a good pacifier on hand just in case this does not work.
The method we use is not to give the soother during the day and at night only if he persistently asks for it. When he wants to talk we ask him to take the soother out of his mouth before he talks and he obliges usually without resistance.
Lastly a tradeoff. Some friends have made a trade off for their childs soothers. With this method which is kind of like a bribe you take the child to the toy store where they trade their soother for a toy.

Whichever method you use is up to you. The one that works is the right one.

A friend of mine told his son(2.5) that the "binky fairy" would come and leave him a little match car(that's what his son was into) for every binky that he placed in the basket and left outside. My friend said that his son had binkys in places that he didn't even know about. But as promised the next day the binky's were gone and cars were in the basket. The son has only asked a couple times about the binky's. But his father has told him if he got the binky's back he wouldn't have the cars. His son likes the cars better

I was having major problems with my son's binky addiction! My friend absolutely raved about the cut method, and all of the psychology behind it. She emailed me a link to a site that has a free publication ( www.bye-bye-binky.com -supported by advertisements) on dropping the binky, so I tried it. Very cool stuff, worked beautifully for my son. Four days later he did not want anything to do with his binky. Highly recommended! I am also interested in others experiences with this method.... Bella
