How a Bad Golf Swing Could Hurt More Than Your Pride

Linda M. McCloud

No, we all can't be like Tiger Woods on the golf course. Yet, if we don't learn how to perfect our golf swing we can do more than damage our pride and our ego. We can actually damage our body. This means we need to take care when we take that next swing, we need to learn how to swing like a pro and we need to listen to some pointers on how to improve that swing. Who knows these pointers may even help improve our score.

When we have a bad swing our golf ball may land in the rough. This can cause us to become red in the face from embarrassment. It can also lead to problems to our lower back and sore elbows. Why? The simple reason that the golf ball landed in the rough should be our clue that our swing is off this also means that our balance is off and over time this can cause damage to our body.

So how do we perfect this swing? How do we keep the ball out of the rough and how do we protect our elbows and lower back?

Here are some tips on how you may perfect that swing.

  • Tilt your shoulders a bit faster after you make impact with the ball. Evidence shows that pro golfers are quicker at tilting their shoulders upwards than amateur golfers are.
  • Amateur golfers have this tendency to drop their club heads a bit too low at the start of the swing. Pro golfers on the other hand, dip their club heads only a tiny bit at the start of their swing.
  • The difference in the hip swing. This will vary among pro golfers. Watch some film coverage of some of the great pro golfers. Watch their hip action. Now practice. See what feels comfortable. What doesn't put pressure on your back and what gives you the best score.

Follow these tips and you may have an improved golf swing in no time. It may even be one that makes you proud, instead of one that causes you aches and pains.
