How to Banish Bad Breath

Cee Belair
We've all met someone with breath that could kill a cow, make sure you're not one of them that people don't want to talk to. There is nothing more un-attractive than talking to a person who makes you want to run for the hills.

Here are some simple steps to curb bad breath.

1. Take proper care of your mouth. Bad breath can be caused by bad teeth and oral hygiene. Remember to brush your teeth and your tongue. Decaying food can sit between your teeth and cause a bacteria that leads to bad breath. Remember to floss to remove anything that is hanging around in your mouth!

2. Chew a lot of gum. Saliva is the best weapon against bad breath, and by chewing a lot of gum it increases the saliva flow in your mouth. A dry mouth is often a cause of bad breath, and by washing away food naturally with saliva, it can help eliminate odor. Ever notice how your breath smells in the morning? It's caused largely by lack of "wetness" in your mouth overnight.

3. Choose Cinnamon gum, it's sweeter and there is an ingredient in it that appears to decrease the bacteria in your mouth. Ideally, go for a sugar free brand so there is less sugar to stick to your teeth.

4. Drinking more water has a ton of benefits, killing bad breath is one of them. Water will help keep the bacteria in your mouth to a minimum.

5. Eat bread. Low carb diets are everywhere, and bad breath can be one of the side effects. Adding a few carbs to your diet can help get rid of bad breath.

6. Use a water pick as your personal hygiene routine. A water pick can loosen and remove any food particles that are caught between your teeth or under your gumline. If you floss, take a whiff of your floss when you're done, and you'll get the idea of what's living in your mouth.

There can be a lot of reasons for bad breath, but sometimes the root cause is deeper than the ones that I've mentioned. If you try some of these tips and find you still have bad breath, make an appointment with your dentist or your doctor to look for a different root cause. Sometimes liver or kidney problems can cause bad breath, and you don't want to let that fall to the wayside.
