How to Get Your Barking Dog to Be Quieter - Tips to Consider

Lance Esondi
Dogs tend to bark. Some do so when they feel threatened, while others do it all the time, day or night, whether appropriate or not. When you have a dog that is barking too much, it can become a rather serious problem. Your sleep or the sleep of your neighbors might be disrupted because of the barking animal. This behavior has to stop. There are a few tips you should keep in mind to help with this problem.

Try the usual approach like you would with a trick. Get a command that you can use with your pet that lets the dog know to stop barking for a moment. Start off using positive reinforcement giving the pet a treat if it obeys you.

If this doesn't work, you might have to use your negative command with your dog. This is the command given when the pet is acting out and you want him or her to stop immediately. If you don't have a negative command, get one. Be sure it's not the pet's name because this is confusing.

If these techniques do not work, it's typically a deeper issue. Barking is done to get attention at times. Your pet might feel lonely or might not have some basic need met in its life. While you might not like this concept, it can be true.

A change in work schedules or not being around can make the pet bark more often because it is looking for attention. If something like running out of food or water is a frequent problem, the same behavior can take place.

Try to spend some more time with your pet and look at anything like food, water, heat and shelter that could be missing for your pet.

Some people choose to use things like barking collars. These are debatable and some find them to be cruel. Many are very effective. You should try these methods first and possibly behavior school before using the collars because they are much better options.
