How to Make a Basketball Birthday Cake: Three Dimensional Basketball Cake Anyone Can Make

Ann Siper
Looking for a fun three dimensional basketball cake you can make for your child's next birthday party? You can easily make this simple three dimensional basketball cake with materials you probably already have at home! It will look like a basketball cut in half and resting on a platter.

To Make a Three Dimensional Basketball Shaped Cake You will need:

1 of your favorite boxed white cake mixes
1 - 2 Tub of Vanilla icing

Black Tube Writing Icing (2 to 3 tubes)
Orange food dye
Butter knife

Oven safe bowl

Bake your favorite cake mix as usual.

The secret is you need to bake it in an oven proof bowl. You can use a stainless steel bowl or even a glass bowl made from oven proof glass.

The second secret to this three dimensional basketball birthday cake is that you will be baking your mix for a longer amount of time. This is because the basketball is so thick.

So, you will need to keep a few toothpicks or wooden skewers handy to keep checking the center. I recommend adding about 15 minutes on to the recommended baking time on the cake mix box. But always check it every five minutes.

Once the cake has cooled flip it out of the round bowl onto a large platter, carving board, or whatever you have.

You will not be able to move it once you decorate it or you will ruin it.

Now, take your 1 tub of the icing. You can use any colors like orange to decorate the Basketball. All you need to do it drop in red and yellow food dye or orange food dye until you get the orange color you want for your icing.

You may need both tubs (or more) to adequacy cover a large three dimensional Basketball Cake.

Coat the entire Basketball Cake with a thick coat of orange icing. Use your spatula or butter knife to make the icing really smooth and flat. The more smooth the better. Reserve some icing aside for touch ups later.

You may find it easier to apply a thin coat of orange icing to the entire Basketball Cake. Then place the cakes in the refrigerator for about an hour.

Once this thin layer has chilled apply another thicker coat of orange colored vanilla icing.

This first coat is called the crumb coat for obvious reasons.

Now it is time to add the stripes. I recommend having a real basketball nearby for inspiration.

Use a clean toothpick to trace your lines onto the rounded cake.

To garnish take your tube of black icing and outline your lines on the Basketball.

Now, all you need to do is write "Happy Birthday Whomever!" and you are finished. You should write the words in another color to help them show up! Red works well and so does white. You can always buy this icing in those pre made writing tube sin the grocery store to save time and money.
