How to Do a Batch Image Resize with Photoshop CS3

A Step by Step Tutorial on How to Simply Resize Many Images in the Folder

LordFury
So you have finally decided to organize the pictures on your computer! No wait....

You have decided to become a graphic designer... No maybe you want to put up a website with database driven pictures or maybe you are just sick of changing pictures one by one so they don't open up and take the whole screen.

Whichever the case maybe I hope this tutorial will end your misery and teach you how to easily resize any amount of images in the particular folder to the desired size.

Preparation:

Before you start this tutorial make sure you have Adobe Photoshop CS or higher installed on your computer!

Next make sure you have a basic computer knowledge and you are not "A.D.D."! Got it? GOOD LETS BEGIN.

TUTORIAL:

1. Double Click on Adobe Photoshop shortcut on your computer either by going to start --> Program Files or just double clicking on your desktop shortcut.

2. Click on File--->Open and Navigate to open any image that you would like, preferrably one of the images that you want to resize. You could also right click on the image itself and select open with Adobe Photoshop.

3. Once you have opened the image you want to bring up the actions panel so Click on Window --> Actions.

That brings up the actions panel.

4. On the bottom of the actions panel there are navigation buttons. On the very right there is an image of a garbage can, that of course stand for deleting an action. You don't want to do that. You wnat to click on the image next to the garbage can that depicts a peeled off page. If you hover over that button you will see that it creates a new action.

Go ahead and click on it! That brings up the New Action Pop up Box. There you pretty much just have to give your action a memorable name i,e "Resize". You can also assign a color and a function key and place it in a folder if you so desire. For Now just name it RESIZE and click "Record" to close it.

5. If you are reading this, that means you haven't passed out from boredom yet, well the fun part begins now!

You might notice that the action with your name is now higlighted in the actions panel and the navigational "record" button (a red circle) is now pressed. That means you are now recording everything you do WOOOO HOOO. Now simply click on ur image to make the window active. GO TO IMAGE --> Image Size to bring up Image Size pop up window. Change the width and a height to anything you want. Make sure constrain proportions box is checked so that imaged doesn't get skewed. other two boxes should be checked as well.

Once you are satisfied with your size click OK to close the Image Size pop up window. You will notice that under your RESIZE action there are steps added which lists all the options i.e width height etc.

6. Hang in there. you are almost DONE!!! :):) The hard work is done. Your actions have been recorded, your life monitored, you are being watched!!!! Sorry got carried away.

SO the last step is just to apply the action of resizing to the batch of images.

Click on the stop (square) icon on your actions panel to stop recording. Now go to File-->Automate-->Batch to bring up the batch pop up window. NOW LISTEN VERY CAREFULLY.

The drop down you see says Set:with default actions selected as your actions folder. If you didn't create a new folder for you actions leave this box as it is. The next one says "Action": Select your newly recorded action "Resize" from this drop down box.

Next box is Source: You can select whether you want the source to be a folder or you want to import files. Leave this as folder. Click on choose button and navigate to any folder with images that you want changed.

In the destination box select an option to save and close, so that photoshop automatically opens the image resizes it and closes it.

7. Thats it Click OK and enjoy the majic.... :):):):):):):)

Hope this tutorial helps you achieve your goals. As always comments, critisizm and thanks are encouraged.

Peace!

Sarah, its actually easier than you think. If you recorded a save for web and devices step in the actions, then all you would need to do to get rid of the annoying pop up is when you go to FILE->Automate->Batch under the drop down box with label Destination select the check box that says "Override Action "Save As" Commands. That should take care of it. Thanks

    Great Tutorial.

I have a question: How do I prevent it from asking me "Image Quality" for every File? The popup that hops up when you save for Web and devices?
