How to Make Bath Salts Yourself!

Chloe Thorn
These little jars of salts are simple to make and allow you to choose or make new scents of your own. You can use these to scent your bath, or you can leave open in your bathroom and it will continually scent your bathroom for weeks.

First you want to pick up jars with lids, preferably the size of jelly jars. These are perfect for two reasons. The first is the mouth of the jar is wide allowing easier pouring, and two because the lids for jelly jars come in 2 pieces you can take the circular disc out of the lid leaving it open, placing a 8 X 8 inch square of your favorite material over the mouth of the jar and screw on the top. This gives you a continuous scent in your bathroom and you can still use in your bath. This is also a great way to make your bath salts match the colors of your bathroom.

The salt you want to use is Sea Salt and you can get this is many sizes, very large granules and very small. Depending on your mood and what you like is what you can use. I prefer using a smaller size but not a powder this way the essential oils blend in well. The following is a standard recipe for bath salts.

1 Cup
Sea Salt

15 Drops
Essential Oil

5 Drops
Avocado, Almond, or Olive Oil

5 Drops
Food Coloring

1 Tsp
Dried and Crushed Flowers/Citrus Rind

Mix all of these ingredients together in a bowl. Than let it sit out and the oil dry for a full 24 hours. Than put into the jar and close up. You can use this immediately after that.

Some other mixes you can use for bath salts would be to add baking soda for fizziness, only add about 2 tablespoons per jar. You can also add other good smelling items like dried mint, vanilla beans or eucalyptus. Just make sure if adding any flower or plant that it is completely dried out and than crushed so that it does not spoil your whole jar of salts.

If you want to use these as a room freshener you can leave out the Olive or Avocado Oils this is mainly for moisturizing skin. Instead just add 5 more drops of essential oil. You can really create different scents and combination by doing this yourself. It also gives you more freedom if you choose to add more oil for a stronger smell or less for people with severe allergies.
