Many kids go into college without a plan. They don't know what they want to do, they've never been on their own and they don't know how well they're going to adjust to their new environment. These things are all typical , but what can be hard is paying back money for bad college experience. Unfortunately it does happen. Some kids get homesick, some get lazy, some get physically sick, others drop out or fail. Whatever ever the circumstance , it's tough to pay back money for an education you didn't get.
First of all, if you're planning to attend college for four or more years , then you should consider checking out the programs and the cost of community colleges in your area. You can save a tremendous amount of money on your first two years and then transfer to the college of your choice. If you choose this alternative make sure it is a reputable college and that the credits and/or degree is transferable. In addition, if you have maintained exemplary grades and/or participated in extracurricular activities or community service then you may be eligible for some hefty scholarship money.
The workplace is also a place to start looking for college money. Many employers offer scholarships or tuition remission programs. If you or your parents work for a large company, grocery or department store, etc. then you should inquire about any available scholarships for employees and their families.
Colleges also help you find ways to make your education a reality. Most colleges now offer work-study programs, internships, or join with local businesses to provide jobs for students. Certain positions at colleges also offer discounts on room and board like R.A.'s for example. Some students also consider doing ROTC programs to help pay for their education.
If you live close enough to a college , you may want to consider commuting. Room and board costs can really add up. Sometimes it's even cheaper to share an inexpensive apartment with several other students.
Today many of us can't afford to write a check for our children's college education, so being creative and saving in today's economy is a must.
