How to Make an Old Fashioned Christmas Ornament

Shana Dines
To make a beautiful Christmas ornament with an old fashioned look is simple. It is so simple that with a little guidance and supervision you can make them with your children. All you need is several scraps of gingham fabric, or any fabric of your choice, Styrofoam balls and a seam ripper or a paring knife. You can try using a plastic knife for the kids.

You will need a pair of scissors and a Christmas ornament hanger and some ribbon that matches the fabric. These Christmas ornaments look elegant and original and yet are very simple to make.

At your favorite craft or fabric store such as Michael's, Joanne's Craft and Fabric Store or Hobby Lobby you will be able to find the supplies that you need. You can find small quilt block packs if you want to find fabric that is already coordinated. I like to get a quarter of a yard of Christmas fabric in different patterns.

Cut your fabric in triangles, squares or any other similar shapes. Start by taking one piece of fabric and pushing the edges into the Styrofoam ball. Take the next piece and push the edges in next to the other edge that is already in the ball. Do this with your seam ripper or the dull side of your paring or plastic knife. It will only take a few minutes to get the hang of it. Cover the ball with this and it will look quilted. You can put a hanger in the top of your Christmas ornament and tie a coordinating velvet ribbon to the top of the ball.

If you want more of a Victorian flare, you can get ivory or white fabric with a tiny rose pattern and coordinating light colored fabric. You can add some pearls and ribbons, and miniature ribbon roses and these are gorgeous for a Victorian look. Tie a pink or gold ribbon to the top of the ornament, add your hanger and you have created another lovely Christmas ornament.

These are simple and beautiful as well as inexpensive. Kids love making them too and they make wonderful Christmas gifts.

For a lovely gift you can make 6 or dozen and box up for a beautiful Christmas gift for your family, friends, or teachers. You will definitely want to keep some for your own Christmas tree. If you want to make smaller ones out of smaller Styrofoam balls they are beautiful on a garland that you can drape over your valance or wind it around your staircase banister.

Many people have to or choose to make their own ornaments. It can add sentimental value if you have made them with your children, grandchildren or as a family.

Great and simple craft idea! It is so hard to find something that kids can do also.
