For young children, prepare the masks ahead of time and let the kids enjoy decorating the crafts. Older children will enjoy the entire process, including choosing fun, scented stuffings for these stress-relieving Mother's Day gifts.
Choose a fabric with a fun bright pattern, like pink on black damask or pretty florals, or a nice, smooth texture, like satin or faux silk. Trace an outline of an eye beauty mask on the fabric. You may want to use an existing eye beauty mask or trace your own for this Mother's Day craft. The basic shape of a beauty mask is a long oval which just rests and covers the eye area. Some eye masks have a slight, curved indention in the bottom center to allow it to rest on the nose. Other masks have a similar curved indention at the top center as well to emphasize the large oversized eye areas. Either way, trace and cut out two identical eye mask shapes from the chosen fabric.
Place the pieces of fabric with the "right" side of the fabric together. The "right" side of the fabric is the pretty side you want to see in the finish craft. For this step, lay one mask shape face up and one face down on top of it. Line up the edges and sew around them leaving a two-inch gap on one end. The edges are less likely to pull apart later if you leave ¼ inch trim around the eye mask as you sew. Now you have a pocket from the fabric. Pull it inside out so the "right" side of the fabric is now outside. Poke out the inside of the pocket and lay it flat again.
Make a scented filling for the Mother's Day beauty mask in a scent your mom loves. Lavender, rose and patchouli are common eye mask scents. Try to find dried flowers and herbs in the right scent. Avoid mixing too many scents together. Instead, stick to one scent. Mix ½ portion dried lavender (or your chosen herb or flower) flowers with ½ portion flax or buckwheat. If you cannot find dried flowers, use scented oils to scent the flax or buckwheat. Scented oils can be found at most craft stores. A few drops is usually enough. You can add scented oils to the exterior of the craft later to refresh the scent. Pour the scented potpourri mixture into the beauty eye mask craft. Fold the remaining two-inches inside the mask and sew it closed.
Attach a length of ribbon to each end of the decorative eye mask. Choose a color to coordinate with your fabric. Now, decorate the Mother's Day craft. You can cut short one-inch section of black French fringe and glue them in the center of each side of the mask where the eyes would be. Be sure the fringe is hanging down and the mask will look like a sleeping woman with long lashes. Use buttons, sequins, beads, and fabric paint to finish decorating the Mother's Day beauty masks.
Once the gift has dried, wrap it in tissue paper and include some small scented candles and a CD of soft music. Mom can relax with her home-made gift and keep it in her bedroom or bathroom as a sweet reminder all year long. Use scented oils to refresh the scented masks throughout the year. These special Mother's Day gifts can also be used as drawer sachets for lingerie or to hang from rearview mirrors to keep her car smelling sweet.
