How to Become a Better Dancer

Tips to Get Your Feet Moving

Tired of being a wallflower at every wedding you attend? The only way to become a better dancer is to dance more often. Taking dance lessons to learn the basics or new moves to your favorite style of dance builds your confidence so that when it comes time to hit the dance floor you will feel like you always belonged there.

The following are tips to help you become a better dancer.

Join a class: For those who are totally confused and do not know where to begin when it comes to dancing joining a local class is the best option. Additionally, finding an advanced dance class if you are already comfortable with a specific style of dance but want some new moves is the way to go. Ask friends and family if they can recommend a studio or teacher and don't worry about not having a partner, there are plenty of class offerings that do not require one.

Audit the Class: Ask if you can sit in for a class that is already in progress to determine if the teaching method is effective. Make sure you can understand the teacher, if steps are demonstrated, and that the class is able to follow.

Try Different Dance Styles: To keep things varied and interesting look for a class that covers more than one style of dancing. This gives you the opportunity to gain a foundation in several dance styles for that big wedding or event. If you are already familiar with a style, like salsa, but want to become better look for a class that covers a variety of Latin dances.

Keep At It: Not everyone is great at everything right away. Give yourself the chance to get better rather than expecting to sweep across the dace floor like a pro after the first week. Once you have had a few classes it does get easier and the time on the dance floor is a confidence booster.

Put Your Lessons To Work: As soon as you feel comfortable trying out your new moves go and give the dance floor a test run. You worked hard during those lessons so you might as well have some fun now. Try places that are casual, nothing formal for the first time out. Make sure you take friends along who know of your lessons this will give you a couple dance partners if you are hesitant to ask anyone out onto the dance floor for the initial dances.

Online Sources: Still a little hesitant to enroll in a dance class. Try these great websites with free online video clips demonstrating several styles and dance moves. The first is www.learntodance.com which offers several five minute video clips of full length dances that demonstrate several moves. The videos are a little quick paced and good if you are looking to brush up on familiar dances. For total beginners I recommend www.learning2dance.com which shows individual steps for couples, the man and the women all separate. I also like that each step is counted out and described. The dancers do the entire step and then slow it down for a close up of each move.

Have fun on your way to becoming a better dancer.

Yeah, I wish I could learn to dance. Unfortunatelym I don;t have the time to devote to it. But I always admire people who can. This was a nice article. Thanks!
