As the name suggests, cardiovascular technologist work under the directions of doctor in diagnosing heart (cardiac) and also blood vessels (peripheral vascular) issues. A cardiovascular technologist can specialize in any of the following four areas.

Cardiology - This is also called "cardiology technologists" and this branch specializes in helping the physicians implant cardiac catheters.

Echocardiography - All the cardiovascular technologists, who wish to choose this discipline, perform ultrasound techniques on the patient's heart.

Electrocardiography - This is also called "EKG Technicians". This discipline is responsible for performing electrocardiograms (EKGs) and also run stress tests. They are also responsible for equipping the patient with a Holter Monitor.

Vascular Technology - The cardiovascular technologists that perform the task of evaluating blood flow issues and abnormalities.

Every cardiovascular technologist undergoes a two year course and receives the required degree. Usually the two year program begins with some general education requirements like biology and ends up in the specialized topics and contents that you have selected as the field of interest. The beginning of the course is dedicated to the core of the subject. This is followed by the second year which is dedicated to specific instructions on noninvasive, invasive cardiovascular or noninvasive vascular technology. The people who are allied with this profession need to finish one more year of specialized instructions only.

Training for cardiovascular technologists and the necessary education will depend on the qualifications of the individual. Your field of interest can also play a role here. In case you liked to be trained in invasive as well as noninvasive cardiology, you will have to stay a bit longer in school. Regardless of whatever discipline you choose you will also have to learn how to interact with your patients.

With reference to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, any discipline of cardiovascular technologists earned a salary between $ 23,670 and $ 67,400 in 2006. Around 75 % of the cardiovascular technologists will be working with hospitals. You will probably have to work five days a week and over 40 hours a week as a cardiovascular technologist. You might also work weekend shifts which is not at all rare.

Apart from all this, you must prepare yourself for the following:

• Be prepared to spend time on your feet.

• Be prepared to lift equipments that will be heavy and assist the patients physically when they have to be moved around.

• Be prepared to wear heavy aprons for your protection during specific procedures.

• Be prepared to take up and perform tasks that can affect the function of the heart of a patient directly.
