Step One
Attend a university and earn a bachelor's degree in the science of nursing, or BSN. Numerous universities in Oregon offer BSNs, including Western Oregon University in Monmouth, Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, Concordia University in Portland and Walla Walla University in Portland.
Step Two
Contact the Oregon State Board of Nursing at 17938 S.W. Upper Boones Ferry Rd., Portland, OR 97224-7012 by mail or by calling 971-673-0685 to apply for an RN license in the state of Oregon and to apply to take the NCLEX-RN exam to become licensed to practice nursing in the state of Oregon. Pass the NCLEX-RN exam and earn your license.
Step Three
Enroll in a university that offers a graduate program in nurse-midwifery. The only university in Oregon currently offering such a degree, according to American College of Nurse-Midwives website in March 2011, is Oregon Health and Science University in Portland. You can attend a university in another state if you prefer and then return to Oregon practice nurse-midwifery. However, you'll need to obtain an RN license in that state before you can enroll in a nurse-midwifery program at a university in that state. See other nurse-midwifery programs nationwide on the American College of Nurse-Midwives website . Earn your graduate degree.
Step Four
Telephone the American Midwifery Certification Board at 866-366-9632 or write to 849 International Drive, Suite 205, Linthicum, MD 21090 to sign up for the examination to become a certified nurse-midwife. You can take the exam at numerous different testing sites in Oregon, including sites in Coos Bay, Eugene, Klamath Falls, Medford, Portland and Salem. Pass the examination to become a certified nurse-midwife.
Tip
Many nurse-midwifery students choose to work in a hospital labor and delivery unit as a registered nurse for a year or two prior to entering a graduate program in nurse-midwifery. The hands-on practical experience can help you as you move on to learn more advanced skills.
Warning
It is illegal to practice nursing in the state of Oregon without a license. In Oregon, you must also have a license to practice midwifery, as is the case in many other states, though not all.
