If you want to become a clinical laboratory scientist, you will have to acquire a bachelor's degree in medical technology from a university. A degree in biological science is also acceptable. It will probably take you four years to complete your study. Majority of medical facilities will usually employ people from regionally or nationally accredited universities. Check the schools you are applying too just to make sure that they are accredited.
You will usually start your career working as a assistant to a laboratory technician and then gradually receive extensive knowledge and training to become a qualified clinical laboratory scientist. Some specific verifications or license might be necessary by some employers in certain states.
Those that obtain a major in the field of medical technology or some related biological science branch like physiology or chemistry will receive a lot classroom instructions as well as laboratory experience. You will also have to learn terminologies, the equipments involved in this field and also different techniques. Some students choose to join advanced statistics or mathematics courses to gain a good understanding of the analytical part of this field.
Another option for you to become a clinical laboratory scientist will be to gain employment in any hospital as a laboratory assistant or technician. This requires an associate degree which can be completed from a community colleges or accredited on-line programs. As a clinical laboratory scientist, you will have many duties like setting up the equipments for testing, collection of samples, entering data, cleaning etc. After your third year serving as a laboratory assistant, you will be able to rise to the post of a scientist.
In the USA, hopeful scientists are required to attend a few certificate programs. They are offered by NAACLS (National Agency for Clinical Sciences) prior to becoming an official laboratory scientist. The NAACLS offers programs that are available at most universities, health research institutions and hospitals.
NAACLS is relied upon by many countries to supervise their national certificate programs. Certifications in addition to this are offered by many other professional organizations. This will be very beneficial in getting a job in hospitals and clinical laboratories. Some countries don't require a license to become a laboratory scientist. However this varies from country to country
